Dr Strangelove is a different release to the others and is quite nice. The horrible card boxes on the others have now just been replaced with a proper slip case (in the UK anyway), as i think people were (rightly) put off by them. There are still no extras though, even though The Shining has a fantastic documentary made at the time and most of the others have also had various documentaries made(BBC or Channel 4).

Also, Kubrick was worried about the way his films were presented in pan and scan on TV (before 16:9 tellies were available) and on so some of the DVD releases i believe he unfortunately decided to make them full-frame rather than their proper aspect ratio. If he was still alive i'm sure he would be correcting this for 16:9 tellies.

Dr Strangelove is probably my favourite movie of all time - brilliant script and characterisations. I believe that there was a classic "pie fight" at the end of the movie which was cut for release. Just as well, but it'd be intersting to see.

I'd like movies to come out in four or five different "mixes".

Also I saw Barry Lyndon tonight - first time. I liked the mood and gentle pace although it was ultimately quite depressing. Nice sountrack though, mostly Handel.

Thats the original theatrical release. I had the opportunity to see a viewing followed by a Q&A session with Malcom Mcdowell himself. He dispelled a lot of myths about the film & Kubrick. Another rumor was that the final chapter of the novel was shot but ommitted. The truth is that it was never intended to be a part of the film...

Over 30 years later & people like us are still yappin' about it.

The mark of a great film!

A great film I saw recently was Koyaanisqatsi. Awesome in camerawork, in score, and in concept. VERY highly recommended.

Absolutely agree. The books are way better.

You have to give Kubrick some credit for the movie though. The fact that the special effects and cinematography have held up so well all these years is a real testament to his genius. Still, that opening monkey scene makes me cringe every time I see it. I'm pretty sure if you look closely enough, you can see the costume zippers

I was kinda disappointed in the 2010 movie although I guess maybe it wasn't that bad. I didn't like Roy Schieder in the lead role but that's just me. Kept waiting for the shark from Jaws to pop up and bite him in the ass.

I don't know if any of you ever saw the special edition 2001 DVD but they give you a piece of film cell mounted on a nice frame. Pretty cool. Also, they put like 5 minutes of black screen before the movie begins with just some spacey music. There is also an intermission screen about halfway through the movie so you can go take a leak or something

That's the way the film was originally shown in theaters. Pretty weird! Cool though...

i don't like the intermission, breaks the flow of the film - a modern audience can stand 2.5 hours nowadays - they should have offered it in both versions. Like the 'Prelude' though which was played as you entered the theatre.

tnx for making that clear - I once watched it on some late night TV cultural channel (probably ARTE) and that part seemed much more extended.
It made the impression of an orgy of violence and destruction and since Sept 11 wasn't that long ago there was some strange connection to reality ...

When I saw it on DVD it was just passing as an episode, really quickly - but I have to admit that it can also be a totally subjective sense of time by me.
Movies seem to run faster on a second or third pass
