The movie has just started in german TV, ZDF.
It was a surprise for me, I don´t watch many TV. Today I would watch the news only, but then the movie start. It´s a sooo long time that I have seen this movie.
The soundtrack is really cool and I like the choir work and the whole athmosphere of this movie.
At the moment the apes found the black quader (Monolith) and learn how to use bones as weapons.
Ah, this will be a nice evening.
Music of Richard Strauss in space, simply nice.

This movie is amazing, they have TV telephones, you can have a talk from a starbase to earth for only, $1.70.
Also I´m surprised by the clothing of the people. They are up to date...lol
Only a couple of things betray it's age: the packaging on the peas, carrots etc on the food packs on the Moon shuttle, and the intro sequence to "BBC12" news.
A superb movie. I've watched it sooo many times.
One of my favourite sequences i the initial shots of the main spacecraft and "Dave" running around the deck as "Gayane's Adagio" plays. So sweet and stark. The combination of not-so-obvious elements and the mood they produce is simply brilliant.
I also heard that the music was actually just "filler" material while waiting for a commissioned sountrack, but that the soundtrack was rejected, so the "filler" music stayed in place. Don't know whether this is true or not though...

Kubrick used 'temp' tracks by Ligeti, Strauss (Richard & Johann)etc. whilst cutting the film and had Alex North on hand writing an original score based on these moods and tempi; North even composed an alternate Also Sprach Zarathustra and Blue Danube. Unfortunately for North Kubrick had fallen in love with the 'temp' tracks and the first he knew of his music being dropped was at the film's premier (allegedly - this may be North creating a myth).I also heard that the music was actually just "filler" material while waiting for a commissioned sountrack, but that the soundtrack was rejected, so the "filler" music stayed in place. Don't know whether this is true or not though...
The score is available on CD and personally i found it a little weak compared to the actual music used - Kubrick made he right choice.

Its a decent movie, but they really dont do the books justice. Ive read the entire Odyssey series and its quite simply marvellous. My personal favourite is the final book - 3001. There you get Clarkes huge vision of the history of the galaxy, and the origin of the monoliths.
Its grand.

I believe you are correct sir! Freaky-genius stuff for sure!On 2004-06-17 19:14, ChrisWerner wrote:
Yes, Ligeti must be responseable for the choir work.
Another incredible film along the same(ish) lines is the original Russian Solaris. I believe the director's name is Tartovsky(?). The remake is alright but not monumental like the original. Also from what I've been told is the author who wrote the novel which Solaris is based on wrote other novels in six or seven other langauges. Genius in itself.

The director was Andrei Tarkovsky.
The author is Stanislav Lem, whose Sci-Fi novels are like none other I've ever read. An absolute genius.

The choir music is from Ligeti's Lux Aeterna and also his Requiem. On 2004-06-17 19:14, ChrisWerner wrote:

Nothing can be simpler. In the case of Lux Aeterna, Ligeti started on F# below middle C, sung by the altos. Then he chromatically stacked the voices moving one alto down to F-natural and an other up to G. That piece is scored for 3 of each of the four parts in a choir(SATB) which gave Ligeti the opportunity of having a full octave stack of semi-tones.
I know what music I´ll do tomorrow. hehe
Let us hear what you come up with, Chris.

Are we listening?..

ah yes, Space Odyssey, what a marvelous film. But it must be strange to have the overdubbed german voices! What does HAL say in german when he says "I'm afraid I can't do that Dave"?
"Es tut mir Leid, das kann ich nicht machen Dave"?
Hehehehe, ah well, I have the DVD so I can choose which language to use
btw. does anyone know if there are any decent DVD's of Kubrick's films? All I've found so far is these kinda cheap releases with a cardboard box and no almost no extra's. I'd have expected some massive collectors edition (especially for 2001) to be released but I haven't seen it yet.

the german version isn't that bad, but actually I can't remember it - the 'I'm sorry Dave...' once was the most favourite error beebs on early Macs (first generation) and I'll never get it out of my head againOn 2004-06-19 09:53, King of Snake wrote:

I recently bought Clockwork Orange out of that box series, but as far as I remember it's significantly cut in middle part (Alex confronted with the 'political' violent scenes).
It just makes no sense, something's missing there.
Aside from that Dr. Strangelove is missing in that collection

cheers, Tom

I have Clockwork Orange and Dr Strangelove on DVD too. I think Dr Strangelove has some extra's, but Clockwork Orange hasn't. I can't really comment on wether anything is missing, since this is the only version I've seen of it.I recently bought Clockwork Orange out of that box series, but as far as I remember it's significantly cut in middle part (Alex confronted with the 'political' violent scenes).
