This track uses a dubsub2 for bass, an FM4 put through 'da chopper' for the synth lead, my favourite, the cello sample, and a sampled double bass. Also two homemade drum multi-samples, one panned hard left and right, the other centred. Plus a few other little effects here and there.
Just a first draft . . . not sure about the ending (bit of an anti-climax ?) also have a version with loads of quotes from Key Largo, but wasn't sure whether the music was fine on its own.
All comments technical and musical very much appreciated.

Great Track!!!
The cello was beautiful and moarnful. The drum track just blew me away. So much variation and interest throughout - not just the sounds, but the rhythmic changes as well. The whole track has this "off centre" feel that I really love.
I enjoyed the strange mix of acoustic and FM instruments.
Nothing really constructive to say - loved it and thanks for uploading it. Wouldn't mind hearing the version with the Key Largo samples - just out of curiosity to see how you used them

I also like the repeat of "How far away was that? - oh a few miles!"
Really well stitched together, a keeper for me.
In answer to the question you posed in your original post as to whether or not the music stands up without the Key Largo samples, I'd say yes - no problems there. E flat is a cool note to end on if you ask me

About the song, I was right, I like it a lot and good samples indeed. About "technical" (but just concerning my taste) it seems that those kind of stroke keys amongst 3:00«»4:00 go into much high frequency, perhaps lowering 1 octave would give it less stride.
But what know I to talk about...?

blgrace - glad you liked the samples version. But which one will you keep ? My only worry about the rocco is that while it fits quite well together sample for sample, the 'story-line' as it were is a bit thin ! I don't introduce the fact that they are in this stormy place etc . . .

When I play stuff through my hi fi, or my headphones direct from the computer, the mix sounds alright, but when I play it on my flat-mate's sony the high frequencies, as you say, come out way too strong, and there's not enough mid frequency. Anyone else getting strange frequencies popping up ?

I kept both versions. The instrumental will be a great study. The vocal version already tells the full story. I just picked out the lines I really liked and commented -they were the lines that left an impression on me.

I really like this. The Cello give first some peace and harmonie to this track, then it underlines and raises the strangeness of this song.
The balance between the peace and strange shuffled sounds is amazing. I have no problems with the sound, everything is well balanced on my monitors.
This track can play in a movie or computer game, when somebody is doing a really strange thing, skin someones body or the bad guy is closing in and he looks terrible but sure to do the bad.

again a great track, much more like tapdances again, which i still like the most. what should i say more? nothing really, except that i like the version without the vocal samples much better. for me the words don't work. it's too attached to the original i think. there's no 'universal truth' or statement or elusive idea. but that's just my opinion. in tapdances for instance, it worked really great. very much as intense as mogwai's 'punk rock' or air's 'virgin suicides' (because part of the movie)...

Borg - I think I will use the non-vocal version (gearing up for my first ever demo cd - SCARY !!!) Maybe you're right in that the words (though I do like them, and the film) don't have enough 'weight' somehow. Anyway I'll probably listen to both many times before sending anything off !
