Well Spirit, you know... Just to cover my bases, otherwise...

Okay, I must admit, her big baby blues were pointed at me at a close range - what can I say?! A false move, then, BANG! You don't understand the pressure! Oh the agony of it all!

Reading through the up-coming Cubase SX... It sure looks VERY good to me! And, with buying a VST/32 5.1 now and able to keep it PLUS get a FREE SX upgrade, it definitely looks like a winner! Woohooo!

But, still dreaming of...

tripleDAT24/96 with user customable tripleSKINS, user-upgradable CD-R/W library developer's kit, extensive automation, multiple sync methods specialised for film/video post... OH yeah, stability, too! But, sadly....

Well folks....

Although Cubase SX was looking awesome... I opted for Logic Platinum 5; I also got the new update patch, too!

It took me an hour to decide, reading through each boxes very meticulously! T'was one of my pinnacle moments of decision making - WHEW! Most of the guys at Geetar Centre were partial to Logic - I suppose that finally pushed me to go ahead with it...

This freakin' rocks with SFP via Pulsar II+!!! Both runs awesome on Win98SE & XP Pro (even a bloated XP with running network and all! - go fig..) Still getting familiarised with those ASIO overload messages, et al; but I'm just getting used to it for now.... I know there'll be more ID:10T User error ahead but I'm spearheadin' this puppy!

Much thanks to all of your inputs! I'm still wondering if I should have gone VST/32 5.1 plus a free SX???!!!! DANG!!!
Maybe my next machine....

Oh well, at least I saved some bucko bucks for a leisurely trip!

Also, I haven't seen those MSVCRT & BASE faults either!!! Hoo rah!

Skoal!

I've been using cubase for about 5 months now and I'm not really all that happy with it. I find the way it handles audio to be a real pain in the butt - all the vst effects and synths are great, but all those windows and clutter get in my way. I've ended up using cubase the same way I use reason or acid - a good place to assemble loops, which I then export as wav files and arrange in another sequencer - voyetra's DOP. Hardly a "professional" sequencer, but I've used it for a long time and can go through ideas very quickly. That's really key, though - an interface that helps your creativity. Everybody's method is different, and what works for one may not for another.

I've tried to use Logic, but found the learning curve too steep for the amount of time I had to devote to it.

I've tried to use cakewalk/sonar, but it really gets in my way. But two of my closest music buddies love it...

Logic 5 was the correct choice. Now all you need to do is hurry and get yourself a mac

Ya ain't kidding there, brother! I suppose the more powerful a software is, the harder the learning curve! But, I've been happily chugging along with it over the weekend! Getting my way around it now. Mostly ID:10T User error...

I'm an Amiga (remember that once-glorious piece of machinery?) afficionado meself. Just waiting for its ressurection, as with my hope of a new tripleDAT24 Pro... I'm still using my Amiga 3000/25MHz 68030, 6MB 70ns RAM, 100MB SCSI-1 HD. And, it's freakin' fast and stable. Too bad there ain't any of them Pro-Audio warez for it though (except for my trusty old KCS sequencer).

Well, few issues arising from my early experience with Logic Plat5.1.2 + SFP 3.1. "Logically" for the uninitiated as myself, only having to play around with it for a weekend, isn't enough to gain much proficiency.

4 Issues:

I think I have an idea of Logic's behaviour.....

On Windows 98SE
- During launch, when initiaiting Wave Player, it takes about a few minutes to complete. I can go to the kitchen and cook a quick dinner and come back, and still initiating Wave Player?!

98SE and XP Pro
- During launch, (SFP 3.1 active on background as default on boot), XTC yields a message stating that XTC cannot be used while another Creamware app is running...

- Setting lower ULLI values seem to make ASIO unstable and yields those overload errors much more frequently.

- ASIO overloads, when dealing with screen refresh, windows movement...

CONFIGURATION:

Video setup (ATI Xpert 2000):
Win98SE = 1024x768/16bit
WinXP Pro = 1152x864/16bit

My SFP default startup project setting:
STM 2448 Mixer
ASIO24 Source (16 channel)
ASIO24 Destination 16 channel)
ADAT A Source
ADAT A Destination
No MIDI Source/Dest, no EFX, no synths, etc.

Hardware Mods:
USB is activated on BIOS (for Logic's XSKey)
Issue: USB is shared with PCI 4 & 5- which Pulsar II+ is on

D-Link530TX NIC on PCI 2
Issue: shared with AGP

Adaptec 29160 SCSI
Issue: none

BIOS Settings:
PCI Latency Timer = 32 (default)
USB is activated

What's the best "tweak" for this?

Anyway, With all these issues, I'm finding Logic very powerful and stable Pro audio Warez! Still a little cumbersome with managing my way around but getting there... Not too bad at all!

[ADDENDUM]
Can I get a Parallel version of the XSKey as what they used to use long ago? For this reason of deactivating the USB in BIOS so as to not share Pulsar II+ with another device.

Also, I was very ecstatic when I was able to record 24bit/44.1KHz! The quality of sound coming out of my Alesis Monitor One is astounding! Sounds are much more "live" and punchy! TripleDAT sounds good as well but Logic adds more edge to it! Emagic Soft + Creamware Engine = Power! An awesome combination indeed! This just proves that Creamware's stuff is something to be reckoned with! I'm sure VST/32 would sound awesome too!

Too late buddy. By purchasing Logic you have become an enemy of all Cubase users.

My Logic light saber is armed! Use the force!

Lotuz, I am your father!

Come, join me on the Logic side, LotuZ!
Why do you think your name starts with an L and ends with a Z! (Heavy evil deep breathing in the background)

Z, read the optimize Win98 for audio thread.
For starters your PCI latency is supposed to be 128 not 32, right?

Logic rocks!

I'll try that, although, when I set that to 64, it somewhat bogged down my system, so, I set it back to 32... I'll try 128 this time... I'll check that thread....

Thanks!

You could at least have chosen the ATARI Falcon instead.

For first issue about initializing wav player, go in devices manager->sound and ... -> Go to properties of your creamware card (luna or pulsar) uncheck 'always load devices'

For 2nd issue, you really have to close even the background project to start any software in XTC mode (obviously after activating the XTC mode in sfp setting).

Those 2 issues are NON-ISSUES.

My setup doesn't show those behavior at all.

Cool beans! Much thanks - I'll give it a shot!

As if learning SF3 isn't bad enough, adding L5 just puts MORE icing in the cake!
