Why is second childhood...

Post by Neil B »

more painful than first childhood?
When I was a kid I used to bounce back way faster than I do now.

So, here I am, wait for it.......... just back off a shortened holiday, nursing a pile of broken and cracked ribs
Come off my mountain bike on a single track trail in a Scottish glen on the first day. Nowhere to fall really (if I'd had time to point my body anywhere) and ended up landing ribs first on rocks and bouncing a few times.
I've broken 3 ribs front and back and cracked a couple more. Both shoulders have hairline fractures.
I'm grounded for up to 2 months, but will hopefully be fit for the Christmas holiday biking & hiking.

But, every cloud has a silver lining:
My missus will have to do the housework, cleaan the car, do the gardening and driving (can't change gear or reverse), so I'll just have to sit in my studio and play with my music stuff.
And here's the BIG silver lining - Spectrasonics Trilian is in the post :D :D :D
And, I've just read, Version 5 of Scope is coming? :D

Oh dear... that is pain, Neil. No laughing for you for a while.

I've only done the one cracked rib previously, and it took more than a little management (especially with my regular tuba gig at the time).

Doing both sides and shoulders.....is that the collarbone? - anyway, i can't imagine it. Are you in a cast?

My thoughts and wishes for a smooth recovery are with you.

Oh, the thought of blowing a tuba at the moment .......... no thanks
No laughing? You kidding? I watched an old episode of Victor Meldrew the other night and needed extra painkillers.
The shoulders are a strange one - it's at the side of the shoulders (must have been how I rolled after the bouncing ended) but they're not too painful, just sore.

No, I'm not in a cast. They rarely treat for ribs nowadays unless there is a risk to puncturing the lungs. Fortunately, mine have broken slightly away from the lungs, so it's just time and resting, plus plenty of painkillers.
What worries me is that the painkillers can cause constipation and I really do not fancy having a good strain for the next week or few :)
I'm having to sleep on the sofa propped up:
1) Because I simply can't get out of bed
2) Because I can't lie flat
3) If I did go to bed, I'd worry about the missus having mobile elbows in her dreams

I would give anything though for a good yawn - can't do it - just loads of little yawns.
And I wish they'd invent left handed toilets 'cos I can't press the flush handles with my right-hand side (worst affected)

There's a lot worse off than me - I can laugh at it.
What's remarkable is that I knew I'd done something, perhaps bruised or a couple of cracks, so I carried on for a few days.
We walked or hiked I should say up some big hills for a couple of days
Then I had a couple of days where it was only sore, so we did some road-biking - 2 20 mile rides (12 gears lower than normal).
Then the initial swelling wore off and wow, did the pain kick in.
We got a farmer to laod the luggage and bikes for the journey home and we had neighbours waiting to empty the car and take the bikes off when we got back.
People can be so nice can't they?

Oh, I can't get it out of my head about blowing a tuba like you had to........ I think it'd be less painful giving a blue whale the kiss of life.

playing a tuba IS giving a blue whale the kiss of life, or the equivalent, isn't it?

well, you're pretty adventureful, no?

I'd love to think that the fall had been somewhat dramatic, on a good, fast downhill, like the one shown below (it's Jan by the way)

www.tonaleffects.co.uk/fast.jpg

but it wasn't. It was on this trail, but I was going in the other direction (for a while)

www.tonaleffects.co.uk/rocky.jpg

And, Gary - the way my luck is going, it'd be a juvenile MALE blue whale and I'd get talked about, arrested and put on a register for 10 years

Jeez Neil B........................... r u nuts or something?
I wouldn't even walk on those ankle breakers in the picture.......
We are such spoiled little Putos over here on the West Coast. We have to have groomed trails and scenic rides with perfect weather.
My biggest whine is the double tubing we have to use that keeps the tires from being popped by the occasional rude Pine and Douglas Fir Tree needles.
We are little bitches if there are too many Pine Cones on the trail, but we know the rate of pay for Trail workers, so it's an S.O.P. to complaing everytime you ride so they stay on it.
I do love climbing over a few escarpments of Granite from time to time but that road was a long road of miniature boulders.........must be nuts.?

I hope you heal quickly and enjoy Scopeing while your down..

CiaoMein.

Check out these fuckin' Pineapples....... :o

Kylie,
it is a beautiful area - you can see more on the biking pages of our site - click on the menu items etc etc for biking routes

Jimmie
Please thank that dear lady for finding my testicles - I haven't been able to bend down so I didn't know they'd come off as well
Damn, it's worse than I thought.

And the Tahoe link - tell me that mountain biking page isn't tough - they look like boulders, not sponges to me - now I simply must try that trail when I'm healed!

The Pine Nuts are really tasty and make a great pie and also certain Italian recipes of the Roma style. Slightly OT, but listen to " The Pines Of Rome " by Respghi.......awesome.
The squirrels get really jacked off when we take all of their nuts.
Lake Tahoe Squirrels are the fattest little bastards I ever saw. They can barely climb a tree since they Gorge on Pine Nuts year round. They actually bury them and during the snow season, come back and dig them up. Seriously frisky critters.
And sure Neil B. there are some serious esparpments of sandpaper granite, but as I said, I am a Puto and stay on the trails with the rest of the bitches...
I can actually rub the callouses off of my heels on the Granite and file down my Chinese length toe nails too.
If I had busted ribs I couldn't suck in my belly and stick out my chest when the dames drive by..so I play it safe. :D

Yeah, not a bad single malt at all. I think it's the highest distillery in Scotland too.
Interesting re some of the other pages:
Strathdearn - the entrance to the glen is right by the Tomatin distillery - just finished a bottle off before my accident.
Tomintoul - Glen Avon/Builg is on the Glenlivet estate (which has 85 miles of off-road biking and walking just on the one estate).
The Glenlivet 15 year old in French Oak is my current Speyside favourite - except I can't drink it until I'm off the painkillers.
Looked at a house 500 yards from the distillery once but it was too remote.

No wonder I keep falling of if there are all these whisky places about - must be in the air

I like it very much. the highest distillery, hu? in terms of altitude?

too sad. tomintoul, tomatin and also glenlivet aren't part of my arsenal. glenlivet mainly because I couldn't decide which to buy.

yes, that would have been my guess. :D

Kylie - yep, altitude
Ken - thanks mate - nice to hear from you.
Cabin fever is setting in already! I think I'll go for a short walk today and then get stuck into some music - if I can hold my arms up to the keyboard and play! I'll probably come to love the Cubase editors and nail each note in one by one with the mouse :)

Well, every cloud has a silver lining.
Ribs are improving - I can yawn now and I plan to go to bed for the first time in over a month this weekend (sick of sleeping upright in a chair).

I've used the time well though. Our website was long overdue a major overhaul and it's finally updated and uploaded - all 93 pages of it !!!!!!!

So if you guys want to buy your wives a nice painting for Christmas (special discounts for friends) or try some of our biking routes (watch your ribs) etc etc, then have a look in at

http://www.tonaleffects.co.uk

Now, about those 500 new bass synths I've just updated in Trilian.....................

Trillian is suppose to be the Bass instrument.
Hans Scheffler has been BETA testing it for a year and making some impressive demos.
I am only waitin to see whar NI has Scarbee doing now and I will be making a choice.
Sounds like you used your time wisely.
I really miss home ( Tahoe ) when I am down here in Vegas, the picture below looks the Mt. Rose side of Lake Tahoe foothills exactly, I got homesick.
Yeah it's a trip, you meander your way up those snow covered peaks and find the waterline is 10,000 feet up.
Looks like a pile of mashed potatoes & gravy on a plate from the plane...

Get Well and send us some Bass snippets...
