You do not *need* a $20,000 piano and great acoustic space to beat sampled piano. You need good recording technique and talented musicians. A well recorded piano played live will always sound better than a sequence of well recorded piano samples because there are no limits with layers.

It won't be a grand piano though and I believe either through hundreds of layers or physical modeling or a combination of both it will be indistinguishable one day. Digital cameras normally don't have the kind of resolution that film does but at some point, the quality is good enough. There are limits to human perception. It's clear that "fake" pianos get better as time goes on. I'm not willing to predict that they have now stopped evolving.

Aaaaw! Fun is useful! But seriously, you wouldn't believe the amount of times i didn't weigh in, braincell. It's a large ratio over the years.

Anyway, you caught me with this in the morning, pre-coffee - not fair! My head is a grey area at that time of day, unable to comprehend your stark black and white thang. My apologies :)

Also -both pianos sound furry and felty to me. Do they have a larger tonal range than that?

Yes they do. Sorry I didn't include those pianos. This is the one I use and have set the microphones for already. The bosendorfer piano is the piano used in the era of jazz that I like and it's the piano with the most samples in the QL library. If you really need to hear another one. I can do another.
