How to separate individual samples from sample cd tracks

(Apologies if this has already been posted!)

You know how it is. You just bought that sample cd which is in audio format only. You can rip the individual tracks to a wav easily enough but how do you seperate the individual sounds within the wav file quickly and easily without labourious cutting and pasting in an audio editor?

Head over to Maz's home page and download "WaveKnife". This utility will analyze the wav file and then create another unique wav file for each sample it finds within the original file. It can do batch jobs as well. I just created 664 individual wav's out of a 93 Track Sample cd in less than 2 mins, not including ripping time. Best of all, the utility is free

Recycle does the same, but goes a little further. After all, it's not freeware either. With Recycle you can also chop pieces of music. You can do this with a 'velocity sens' slider and then adjust some chops manually.

You can now export as:
-chopped samples,
-whit accommpanying midi file, so if you loaded the samples into a sampler, you could play back the midi file and adjust ie. the tempo or arrangements,
-recycle files: can be imported in Cubase. Bars and Beats will be taken from the original loop, then the tempo will be adjusted to your Cubase tempo.

Cubase cannot play 2 audiofiles on the same track simultaneously. So if you import a Recycle file and play the loops shorter=faster, ends of sounds will be chopped when the next sample starts.

So when you want to import a Recycle file, set your Cubase audio track to channel 'any'. Loading a recycle file, Cubase will ask you how many Channels to assign to the Recycle file. If you select ie. '4', you could put bassdrums on one channel, hihats on another one, ... and even put different effects on each of the channels/samples easily.

Recycle can also be MIDI/SCSI coupled to most samplers and send/receive samples and properties over that midi/scsi. Cool huh. I think SoundForge has that option too.

Just another way of working with chopped files...

hey, atomic. i tried recycle about 2 years ago. but than i had problems with stereo loops. i fond that i have the best results when i cut wave manualy in wavelab.
so, what's your experience? is newer versions of recycle works smooth with stereo waves!?

Hey Sandrop, yes the latest Recycle (2.0a9 or later) is stereo compatible, and has several specific FX with it.

Atomic: I have spend hours trying to let Recycle do the SMDI job: sending samples from my Mac to my Kurzweil K2500SR.
Peak sample editor does the job very well (!), but Recycle keeps telling me that there is no midi connection found?!?
Recycle DOES 'see' my K2500, but SMDI needs the midi connection too.
I had a RME audiocard before I changed to CW, and then Recycle functioned well, prob because the midi got handled by a Opcode midibox.
Are you saying Recycle should work properly with the Pusar-midi interface?
Peak does, so...
(it's just that Peak does the simple job where Recycle is ART!)

Hi hubirt,

I've never tried to connect ReCyclye to my samplers directly so I have no experience with it really.

If I would send samples over midi, I wouldn't use Pulsar's midi interface. Especially when you encounter any problems.
Samples via Midi is loads of data for the midi protocol.
