“Blogging” a little: my shame of being Italian
here in Long Beach they are shoving a LNG plant down our throats saying that there is suddenly a dire shortage of natural gas. the "authorities" even went so far as to threaten that the garbage might not be picked up(the trucks run on LNG) without the storage facility.
that's one off the top of my head. really, examples of abuse and corruption are too numerous to recount. corruption and misuse of public funds extends to small things like the wealthy neighborhoods here getting new curbs and sidewalks even though the curbs were not broken while the rest of town is a minefeild of broken curbs and sidewalks. the city has the nerve to claim that it is near bankruptcy and can't afford to fix them...budget crises and yet SOME people's situation improves...Long Beach is part of the Port of Los Angeles complex, one of the busiest shipping centers in the world. there's a LOT of money here.....
complaining is easy though....

I'm not shure I've completely understood about the LNG thing, but I can see the pubblic administration following the same contract "politic" there.
People here didn't limited himself to complain, when this summer the local soccer team was coming to be moved down to the lowest division, because of a one day delay in the presentation of the fiscal documentation (sorry for my Italian English). People blocked the ferry boat for quite a week, creating huge gathering of trucks waiting.
Unfortunately, absolutely not the same number of persons here moves against different and more important and outrageus things.
It must be however mentioned that, on the whole, the police let them doing the ferry boat block.
Just common people were blocked in the trucks and cars.
It was not the same on July 2001, Genova, during G8 when Carlo Giuliani was murdered.
It's something similar to the 5 hate minutes by Orwell..

You're right. For people addicted to "on tires" transport it's a great idea.
I don't think however a time saving of an half hour can be significant for transports taking a couple of days to go across Italy.
But a new fast-speed railway would take away a substancial market slice, really lowering run times. With related negative employment implications.
Positive implications considering environmental pollution factor (only few city busses and a low percentage of cars use LNG in Europe).
I don't wanna belive this battle is over, can't belive they can steal all that money.
Money that might be used for creating really solid employment alternatives..
I'm in fear thinking about so much money in the hands of people with few scruple..
