Unfortunately , in many cases , removing vocals , you 'll remove and some frequences from orkestration , but must to try ,with patience , the results are different in each case !

I hope this 'll be useful to you !

My opinion:
As a programmer of MIDI files I have dealt with many people who asked if they could remove vocals from ripped songs so they could accompany themselves with the original track minus the vocals.

I have tried a lot of these applications to some extent and have found absolutely NONE that work in a desirable fashion. The end results are invariably flanged, ugly sounding and totally unuseable in a live context.

Someone will come up with an adequate app eventually...

Well I'm sorry to bring bad news here.. but as musicians we are not away from the physics laws, the only approach to vocal removing technique is the phase cancelation between right and left channels, that implies only one thing..: any sound that is panned "at center" will be eliminated by shifting one of both channels. Some engineers use to put orquestation sounds way left or right and the voice just in the middle..(some Shakira recordings do this BTW).. in the cases where it's not like this.. everything is more or less panned in the middle and some frecuencies will be irremediably affected. That's like a finger-print for every song you try to process. I doubt there will be some application to handle this 100%. Again.., no software can replace a hard-headed-good ears-sound man.

Once or twice I worked with the X-Noise Demo from the Waves Restauration Bundle.
This is the best Plug to eleminate running noises, and the usual noise from bad tape recordings. For this kind of noise erase it works perfect.
Just record or play a part of the music where you can hear the noise only and let X-Noise learn the "fingerprint" of it.
After that, the noise is filtered out without showing a loss to your music.

If I remember right the presets work for Vocal remove too. Has somebody tried it with X-Noise?

We will have to wait for new audio standard, where the material comes multi-track and everybody can make their own mix.
Of course, a default one would be delivered.

that's not so new, Spoimala. If you're lucky you can pick up one of those 8-track tape units (from 60-70s ?) on eBay.
Even the tapes are still traded, but I remember there was lot of funk and disco stuff - not exactly your preferences

Chris, I like your idea - it comes very close to what's on many current records

Snoopy, want a Shakira record with the music removed ?

cheers, Tom

I have an easier solution:
Stick the tune in a wave editor and constantly amplify the wave to 0...

Ha ha, I´ve tried it with the V3.5 X-noise demo. The result was perfect.
I import "Still My Beating Heart -Sting" to Wavelab and let X-Noise learn the vocal verse. Then I let work X-Noise with the preset speech focus.

The result sounds like the vocals pass a HPF and all other instruments were cut away.

Oh, I remember you want to remove the vocals from the music and not the music from the vocals, damn.

ahhmm, it wasn't intened as a joke
I have a 12" of Whenever/Wherever with only the vocal track (among other mixes).
Thought Snoopy might be a fan... anyway, also a cute test track for all kinds of vocoders etc

cheers, tom

astroman, where did you get that?!?!
Can you give it to? I think it would be worth making a death metal version out of it

 I guess it's some DJ promo vinyl, but complete with cover. My prefered record shop gets that stuff frequently. I can mail it to you with an appropriate compression (I'll check for no artifacts).

cheers, Tom
