It is not advisable to change the mode. You'd better reinstall windows.

well, you could go into the system properties, the device manager, click on the " computer " icon, and change the setting to standard pc - this is a good way to assess if yur problem is there before attempting a complete re - install. BE WARNED, check in the BIOS of your motherboard to see if there is a way to change your interrupt mode from APIC ( advanced) or PIC ( standard). the reason behind this is simply to avoid hardware /software conflicts. for example:

a p4 motherboard with APIC capability would give you 24 irq's in ACPI mode instead of the usual 16( this setup gave me serious MIDI latency problems and double note recording but thats probably due to the way i built my computer) the suggested thing to do then in this case is , if you wish to use standard pc mode ( recommended; i spent 3 weeks trying different setups and came back to this in the end), make sure that the interrupt mode in the BIOS on your motherboard is set to PIC mode, then when doing the re-install, hold down F5 when it asks you if to press f6 to install a 3rd party scsi or raid controller - this will put you imediately in a position to choose standard pc right from the start, you'll have disabled any fancy frilly bits from the motherboard, everything will have its own irq ( disable unused ports like rs232 or serial to insure this) andyour life making music ((should))be conflict free.
