You actually got abre's version on the correct answer. Opinions are diverse i this matter. You will find people doing better with XP and others doing best with 98se.

if i were you i wouldn't upgrade vst or win98... i just had a horrible week end with sx (cannot work with it). xp doesn't bring much i think for music....
no "need" to upgrade really.

xp is much better to me.
after few simple tweakings i'm able to set much lower latency (3ms) with much more stability.
so, vote to xp

XP, SX, and SFP 3.1c have made for the most stable combo on my CW system yet!

I even have had no problems with the much maligned Athlon XP... (And there are serious bang for the buck considerations IMO!)

the latency issue is good for wave or for asio ?
I think XP is fine (what is better is a better cpu/ram here) but is it really "needed", i'm not really sure, although i use it with sx (which sounds better than vst).

i also had a 3 days nightmare under sx, now it seems to be solved (seems to be a dongle issue, when you install patches etc). So i would advise xp/sx too, but if there were some cubase rep around me, they would be dead right now

edited : about the latency : if you could give more details it's appreciated. I beleive it's for wave only, but not asio, right or wrong?

mmm, for asio ? i thought asio was dependant of your hardware. Here i use version 1 board from creamware (no ulli, 13 ms latency max). if someone could be so kind as to post a "tip and trick" or enlight me in how i could improve this....

With your current setup, it might be taken into considderation, that XP uses more of your computers power - especially your RAM.
