A survey found that 11% of Americans can't find their own country on a map of the world

For other alarming results have a read:

I think this is not to serious, but it starts to be serious when people do not find a HEART within themselves… and it seems nowadays it’s happening more and more…

If you can find yourself, you’ll find America, and whatever else you want to...

Not targeting Americans here, not many other countries came out too well either.

I'm amazed at how little some people know. Years ago I went out with a girl who was a store manager. We were chatting and I happened to start talking about space (one of my favourite subjects).

Anyway it soon became obvious her knowledge was slim. When I gently asked "do you know roughly when the Moon landings were?" she replied: "Ummm, in the 1920s ?"

It's a strange world that some people inhabit.

I find it fascinating to contemplate how some people must interpret world events and history when they either have no idea when events have happened, in what sequence, or roughly where.

I insist… you can become a “know-it-all”, and still be a complete ignorant, as long as you don’t know yourself! Intellectual knowledge does not mean to be better, but to get to know yourself IS becoming a better person, cos you discover your defects and the consequences of them, your errors. You can know all the maps of the world by heart if you want, as long as you don’t know yourself, this knowledge is of very little value…

Some people know a lot of things, and they use their incredible vast knowledge to destroy human beings, through the building up of terrible and awfully intelligent weapons… so what?

There are people from the countryside that do not know how to write nor read, they don’t know mathematics or philosophy… history or are aware of modern science… But some of them are far more interesting people, deeper and in fact “mature and knowledgeable” people from within. The important thin in a human being is not the level of knowledge it has, but THE LEVEL OF BEING! Many know much, and are still crazy ignoramuses with respect to life and the sense of it!

yes, nestor, the point is to be a good person and know one's self.however it is ignorance in general that these dark forces use to keep one from that true knowledge.it's important to know the facts and history in this life even though the importance is temporary, because otherwise day to day life is just confusion and survival,a situation that doesn't allow the contemplation of higher truths but keeps one living as a clever animal instead.ask poor people.........i agree with salvador dali who said that if everyone saw how ridiculous hitler really looked in that uniform, the laughter would have defused the bomb and ww2 would have never happened...but they took him seriously
to quote another artist of dali's era marcel duchamp, loosely thusly: "c'est la vie"

in an age when the internet allows me to speak to those all around the world,to be an imperial power and live off the wealth of those who are less violent(americans have the best of everything available and if not the best then lots of it),it is disrespectful to not read a map....or at least grossly ignorant and mis-educated....

and many simple folk are not as lacking in knowledge as one might think.

BTW do you know an old joke about 2 blonde girls? A blonde asks another one - how to pronounce: Iraq or Iran?

Humanity is nothing without knowledge. And while glorifying the uneducated peasant may seem noble, I believe it's also wrong.

Sure the life experience and thoughts of illiterates may be of great worth, but in broader terms you can't build a society of any substance on a foundation of such profound technical ignorance.

They might be able to tell you some interesting heart-felt stories from their life, but meanwhile their kid is dying because they can't read a simple health warning.

The glory of humanity is the continual accumulation - and hopefully application - of knowledge.

I agree with you Garyb, knowledge it is necessary and people should be interested to know their own roots and culture, then they will respect others too. I’m not against knowing everything, in fact, I myself am a never satisfied student, I study almost everything I can cos I love to know. There is almost nothing I don’t like to know about. The differentiation I was doing was pointing to the fact that there are many people interested in knowledge, but they use it in the wrong way, to exploit others, so if you were to use it the wrong way it would be better not to have it at all…

Spirit, you said: “Humanity is nothing without knowledge. And while glorifying the uneducated peasant may seem noble, I believe it's also wrong”.

I’m not telling we have to be kind of accepting ignorance! ABSOLUTELY NOT! I’m just making a difference because there is a rather bad use of knowledge nowadays, this is my point, so I agree with you completely.

I would differentiate life, nevertheless, into two sort of knowledge, the first is the common knowledge, the one you use for your everyday life, and the other is your inner knowledge. None of both can exist without the other, cos they exist under an interdependent situation. The external is what makes you understand the internal and the other way around; the one can’t exist without the other. But if you were to build a statistics in the world about how people use what they know, you’ll see that many of the know-it-all people, many of those learned peoples are in fact heartless people.

Well… think about how many attorneys are extorting people. Think about the traffic or organs made by some groups of doctors to full their pockets with money! Think about how many politicians are up there just cos they want to be powerful being among the most knowledgeable people in the earth. Think about mass destruction weapons and technology! Think about the Mix 25 and it’s incredible and fantastic technology! Think about the mass scientists that sell their inventions to produce bigger volumes of food (despite the fact they know very well these elements will cause cancer in the following generations) just to get rich! I could give so many proven examples to this…

Very true, but increased knowkedge doesn't cause evil. Knowledge is a magnifier: whatever you do the application of knowledge will increase its effect and power.

aggressivity and bad feelings are mostly due to fear, and the way knowledge makes people less scared, things go better....

for example what is racism? nothing but fear.
what is integralism? intolerance? sexuophobia? death penalty?
all of these things are fear and ignorance, and there is also who builds his political fortune on this.....

Hello pz friends, hehe spirit i agree lot of people have some geographic problems.
One day a friend of mine was in Miami talkin with a miami girl she asks him where do you come from?
He says from Oman, she asks again "and where is Oh Man?"he replies "near Yeah Man!".Where i work a guy who has study so much (an engineer is supposed to be a guy with a big big knowledge) asks me where is Croatia?i reply 1 hour an half from France,he did not know nothing about what is out of his little vision of the world. There is lot of people like this around there, they have opportunity to access to free knowledge (public library, public museums,etc...).
Here we can learn for free,i really don't know if it is usefull but for me i feel good when i'm learning (maybe an illusion:) Not everybody is curious, and when you are not you miss somethin of this world.
Just another opinion:)
The day when i will put a topic in Pulsar Study forum will be a great day...
