This is wicked ! It sounds so good - really atmospheric and moody yet, as Hubird says, there's a gentleness as well. I really like the sort of Geiger Counter effect, it seems to work really well in the mix though you would expect it to take over.
If anything I did want a bit more variation at about 3 minutes - maybe a new sound or taking the drums totally out or something.
This gets my vote. Very Boards of Canada . . .
Will.

thanks for the kind words all!
mmm, yes, the sound... it's never been my strongest point. i definitely need to get a bit deeper on this one. maybe read the mastering thread that's going on right now.
i must say, i didn't pay any attention to it (time
) i just played the tracks live a month ago, then edited the drum bits before posting last weekend. there's no mastering done at all.
when listening to other peoples' songs, they all sound so much 'louder' and 'better' although when recording in cubase, my recordings seem 'hot' (just not clipping/going in the red).
i'll for sure try and give this one a proper mix...
please: advice!!!

something interesting you could do, is to master the drums and tracks separately. That does creates some strange ambience sometimes. I guess it's not mastering in a real "mastering" sense, but more closer to sound processing. Give the drums a very weak ER up to 100-150hz zone (with the pre-lowpass in masterverb), and then mash it with a finaliza+limiter combo.. You could leave the tracks alone.. maybe it'll work. If not, just mash it. After you've mashed it though, you can mix it in with drums at a very low volume, so as to keep the difference in dynamics (between drums and tracks) that you have right now. Gives it that dark quality the tune has right now. Which, of course, shouldn't be lost.
cool ambience!

yep, nestor, i think the track is too long as well, but the bell like 'lead' was recorded live in one take, and i didn't have enough time to cut out some parts. i will work it out sooner or later, but i think i won't reduce it's length. i'd rather give the bass line a new edge somewhere (yes, it never changes throughout the song
) and an extreme break for the drums here and there...
and the fx at the end... it's a very short delay (1/64) with a high feedback (entire song), which is brought to 127 in the end, and no, i won't change it
i'll even take it a bit further, hehe.
i'm beginning to like the song myself now.
