Ever since upgrading to winXP, I seemed to have lost the ability to play my VST instruments in Cubase with my midi keyboard! They play allright the parts assigned to them, and all the instrument/output boxes in Cubase have the correct instrument selected, but when I select the track I want to play, and play the keyboard, nothing happens, or I get a stupid piano sound from the Microsoft wavetable synth! The midi is coming in allright, since the red indicator lights up when I strike a key.

This is how it's set up:

Midi keyboard + midi out from Nord Rack go into Pulsar midi input via a merger.
In the scope project I have pulsar midi source connected to sequencer midi destination, the sequencer midi source to the pulsar synths and to pulsar midi destination (so I can play the Nord).
This all worked perfectly before, but now suddenly no sound from VST instruments!

I think I checked all the settings in Cubase, the only thing I could find was in the midi system setup, in the right table it say midi output: GS wavetable, mapped to: GS wavetable. When I change it to the creamware midi it still doesn't matter. And when I close the dialog window the setting change back again.

Midi makes my head hurt! Anyone have an idea?

(btw, I'm using cubase 5.1 r1, the VSTi's I'm using are Battery and MDA E-piano)

your sfp project is ok!

did you set out (port) for midi chanel where you want to play vst instrument?

it's good idea to set track for battery to "drum track" and midi chanel to any, than inside of "drum editor" set out to "battery". hm, but battery must play anyway.

maybe you have "multirecord active" and maybe you didn't set everything good?

i never changed nothing in cubase's midi setup, but it's good idea to disable (if you don't need them) "gs wavetable" in "steinberg setup mme".

Still nothing, I double checked all the midi stuff in Cubase, set everything to defaults, in case I might have changed some obscure setting somewhere, checked if midi thru was on...nothing.
The midi gets in fine, I just get no sound, but it plays allright if I just program a part. I can't understand it.

It get's the midi from the keyboard (red indicater lights up) but it then something goes wrong, because it does not output any midi (green indicator doesn't light up). But why only when I use the keyboard, and not when playing a normal part?

Weird thing is also, when I use battery, I get a piano sound from the wavetable (I disabled it now though), but with other instruments, I just get nothing.

Go in windows control panel->Sound and blah blah...->And select creamware as default midi playback device, and also check the 'only use prefered device'.

GS will be out of the equation!

Yeah I already did that, but it doesn't really do anything to solve the real problem.

Monitor the desired VSTi track. Incoming midi on any channel will be routed to it.

that's what I'm doing always, but now it just doesn't work!

Sandrob I tried you file but again, the same problem.

Of course it's something so incredibly obvious and simple we're all missing it. It's just that there aren't that many midi setting in Cubase or anywhere else and I think I checked them all now.

I'm going to try a reinstall of Cubase, who knows, it just might work.

Well, reinstall seems to have solved the problem. Weird, I'm still completely in the dark as to what caused it. Ah well...moving on...thanks for the replies anywayz
