I wrote this track at 9 in the morning after a 13 hour journey back from Austin TX to London. Maybe you can tell !

Quite a few of the drum sounds are sampled from a fly, or from me trying to catch the fly, while in the States.

The lead is a Tuba from a sample CD put through the Z Filter and Masterverb. Also used Z Tapper, FM4 and other things that I can't recall.

Well, happpy listening, if that's the right phrase !

Yes, there is not much as peacefull stuff around as this, is it? It's a nice rare setup of environments and sounds you built there; go on, do some more! Thx for posting!

Lovely feel to this, Mr. Swim .
Sounds like a slide tuba, which is kinda physically impossible, or a very mellow trombone.
I have a tuba, trombone and euphonium sitting here - if you ever want to try an analog one, drop us a message.
These instruments can have a lovely floating quality, which you've used well.
Your music would do well combined with visual/performing arts. Ever turned your hand to that?
cheers W

BTW, how'd ya mic the fly ?

Well, thank all. I've been really trying to create a chilled vibe with very fast beats, so your comments are encouraging.

Wayne - I'd LOVE to make use of your analog versions. I have a french horn too so we could be a whole brass band ! What about if I send you a score, you send me a wav. file ? (or vice versa if you want a horn, although my recording equipment is very poor hence so much sampling . . .)

As for visuals, I've actually done some music for some DV installation by a mate of mine. Trouble was he only gave me about 3 days with all the timings to write about 18 minutes of music. So it turned out pretty repetitive.

I've also been trying to get a friend of mine who's been doing some pro music videos to give me some rejects so I could work backwards, which I thought would be an interesting way round. But he is working 13 hour days as it is, so that hasn't come to anything.

So YES, I've been really wanting to do stuff with visuals / film. It's just a matter of ACTUALLY doing it.

p.s. Criticism welcome by the way

I've got a sm57 and a16, so it's pretty basic here at the mo - but dots are the way to go - send some over, i like a read

Yeah that's generally the problem for sound/music people in a visual-driven field - you get slammed up against a lockoff date and end up with your eyes hangin' out your head

I've worked a lot in theatre, a little film etc., and you have to be very flexible and rock on regardless. Perhaps you could submit some music to a dance company, over there in sunny Londres?

I'll write some stuff with Tuba and Horn, and send it over - that would be very cool.

As for recording, I only have a little Sony Minidisc mic and spdif from the mini to Luna. Now that is basic

Funnily enough, I have another friend who has just done a degree in dance and so I'm pressing her to use me for some projects she is working on. Fingers Crossed . . .

I also know some people who are setting up an organisation which hopes to put some French theatre on in London, so there is another POSSIBLE.

MAJOR problem with doing this sort of work is that I also have to hold down a full-time 9-6 job which makes deadlines pretty deadly  !

What sort of theatre stuff have you been doing ? Are you pro ?

I work professionally in the theatre about half the time, yes.
Mostly working at
Belvoir in Sydney or Yirra Yaakin Noongar Theatre here in Perth.
Did a season at Waterman's in Kew about ten years ago, after Edinburgh and Cardiff.
Follow it up tho, mrswim, it is a wonderful creative foil to cater to visuals, if one is musicentric

The creative foil is maybe this : that the more constraint there is on what one is allowed to write the more interesting the project, the more motivation one has, and in a way the more freedom one has . . .

I tell you I'd rather be writing music than sitting here at work, even if I have just had a 3 hour lunch in the Pub

I can feel you coming back to your place after a long travel… It’s nice and relaxing. I like very much the detail by the end, the fly. I’s nice cos you are certifying you are in a good mood coming back to England.

Hey Mr Swim... meant to comment on this earlier... I was looking through my collection trying to find a "sounds like/reminds me of" comparison.... and when I couldn't find it, I realised perhaps it's just extremely original
It did remind me a little of Penguin Café... A most wonderous vibe, great use of sound....and it took me away somewhere VERY pleasant.

cheers fdumtch, I'm glad to be of service

Only started listening to Penguin Cafe really recently but I'm liking it - good fusion of influences.

This is cool. i put it on my playlist (has quite a few pulsarians, maybe i ought to stop lurking here)

by the way my cat can catch flies and even eat them.

artist "untitled" fix your mp3 tags its easy to do even while you are making sure it sounds ok after you encoded it.

Funnily enough I was cat-sitting in Austin when I recorded this bluebottle. They were much better at fly-catching than me, and I certainly didn't eat the poor beggar !

p.s. just heard that the Government has given me funding for the next two years to study Philosophy ! I am very very excited . . .
