Hi All, I'm new here and hope to get a little advice. I just added a Power Pulsar w ADAT 24 to my Pulsar 1 and will be using it for a live recording in a few weeks. I plan to build a new computer for this and would like advice on systems that WILL handle 40 inputs to 32 tracks. Nuendo will be the recording device. I hear that the IWill KK266 with the VIA chip set is very stable, but Ali at Creamware says VIA is unstable. He recommends the AMD GA7DX board, but also told me to go to this site for advice. My email address is jdurbin@cfl.rr.com
All advice from seasoned pros is very welcome.
Thanks in advance

I would highly suggest an Intel chipset-based motherboard with a Northwood P4. I think almost all longterm audio users around here will agree... ASUS P4B533-C and ASUS P4T533 are both excellent.

Thanks for the input I appreciate it. Has anyone had experience doing this many tracks with AMD CPU's?

DDR or RDRAM.. for P4, RDRAM gives the best performance, particularly with higher clocked CPUs.

You can do what you want on the AMD (get an AMD761 chipset) but again, for the least headaches, I wouldn't suggest it.

How experienced are you with computers, tweaking hardware, drivers, etc? How much time do you want to dedicate to the tech stuff?

Thanks again for the input. I'll take your advice on the P4.
I bought the 2nd TripleDAT system in the South Eastern USA and had to become a computer guru just to make that dependable. I don't mind the tweaking, but I only have till June 9 to prepare for this recording and do not have any room for errors at the job. I still have a learning curve with the software alone so I don't want any unnecessary headaches with hardware.
I went to ASUS website and found a P4T533 that looks like a good MB...any thoughts? Also will try to get the Matrox card if they get it out in time.
Thanks a bunch!

If this 40 input live recording is worth something to you, may I suggest that you don't put in a card that has litterally just come off the drawing board.
Use something cheap, reliable and tested, then upgrade when the new technology has matured.

You will save yourself any unexpected surprises

Thank you for that idea! I won't need 3 monitors for this until I get it back in the studio anyway!! I'll just stick with a Matrox 550 for now. I think I'm startin to really like Planet Z!!

The ASUS-P4-2Ghz+(2Ghz+ is recommended)/1GB+ HD-ATA100+ with Matrox 550 should be very good COMBO. You hardly can go wrong with it! I have 48-I/O (6 ADAT-I/Os).
Please note that, I'm currently using V2.5 with 98SE, there is some buggy in Creamware software capability, nothing to do with PC at all. I'm in the planing process to try out V3.1 with XP, just be afraid of more buggy! Maybe someone here could advise should I? Or I have to wait for new version?
Hope this helps,
Long

No Matter What,

Instal all subs tweaks recommended for your system, but if you're in a real hurry just buy one off of subhuman. He'll sell it to you and you'll have a plug-n-play system with no bugs. If you're more adventerous then hey, check out:

http://www.pricewatch.com and buy some gear.

Good luck.

How about VDAT as opposed to Nuendo for the recording device? Opinions?
