Hi all,

I got my hands on a celeron 1.2 ghz tusl-2 based system really cheap. I read somewhere that it was possible to get that running at 1.6 ghz by just raising the fsb from 100 mhz to 133 mhz and adjust voltage from 1.475 default to 1.8 . The only thing I'm worried about is the temperature. the system is now running with a case temp of 30 degrees C and the cpu temp is 40 degrees C without extra cooling or anything. I read that the overclocking would ad somewhat between 10 to 15 degrees in temp. Guess that's a little to hot for it to run or isn't it? Anybody know a good cooling solution or have experience with overclocking celerons?

Greetz

P.S. maybe if I get that running stable I'll throw in my pulsar luna combo. That would be as if I had a PIII running at 1600 mhz ... Cool right

P.S.2 I read a thread on http://www.overclockers.com about it and they succesfully overclocked and got it running stable at 1.6 Ghz, that's what I wanna do ...

I never got mine up to 1.6 but 1.5 I had to run the FSB at 128? or something. (im at work i cant remember) it means the PCI is underclocked a small amount. im using it with my OASYS machine which is not needing PCI bandwidth for much.

i did not use fancy cooling, just a zalman heatsink with the fan on "quiet" setting. if you used something better you might get to 1.6

Well if I want to use it for my creamware setup I do want to get the fsb to 133 because that would keep the pci bus untouched, so I think I should get some more cooling in there. Oh and defex, what is the cpu temp when you run it at full load? (sandra cpu burn running)? Just curious to see the temp readings cause my studio gets quiet hot sometimes ...

A much more conservative (and likely) choice to hit 133mhz would be the Celeron 1100mhz.

If you go with the 1200mhz chip, seems you have about 50% chance of it NOT hitting 133mhz. Best way to put the odds in your favor: Swiftech MCX370-OA cooler or a large Alpha, with a moderately fast fan -- essential for stabilty at that speed and especially in warmer environments.

Actually in warm environments, you want a lot more 'headroom' on your overclock, or you will get all kinds of strange heat related errors. Especially with Creamware DSPs which also generate a good deal of heat themselves...

Well I didn't think of that and since I allready bought that system I guess I'll have to try it out. The fans you pointed out, aren't available to my local dealer, but the thermaltake volcano 7 is, do you know if that would do the trick, maybe in combination with an extra intake of 120 mm fan and an extra 80 mm fan blowing out of the case to get the overall temp down a bit?

Thermaltake products usually have ANNOYING whiney non-replaceable fans and poor cooling compared with their competitors. I would avoid the thermaltake products. Try to get an Alpha or Swiftech, or maybe GlobalWin. Thermalright makes better stuff like SK6 etc.

I can get my hands on a globalwin wbk38 cooler which has been reviewed as a decent cpu cooler, or not? and I'll be getting the two extra case fans too so that should do the trick.

Oh heat is not much of a problem at only 1.5 its maxing out at 45 or so. but that little bit extra speed + voltage you will probably need can increase it quite quickly.

Hi all,

well yesterday I began testing the celeron and I got it running at fsb 120 mhz with default vcore of 1.475 v. So that makes 1440 MHZ. I ran cpu burnin from sisoft sandra through the night and guess what, nothing happened, temp got to bout 39 - 40 degrees C so I'm quite safe I guess. I'll be testing more today and I'll let you guys know how it went.

Damn,

got it up and running at fsb 125 with vcore of 1.525 and everything was running smoothly, then I graduatly increased fsb and along with it vcore setting, could get it to boot at fsb 133 with vcore of 1.675 BUT it crashed on starting up windows with a BSOD, did a little research and it's the voltage that seems to be the problem. So I guess I'll have to do the thing called : the wire trick......

Keep your fingers crossed everybody, I'll let you know how it went

Hy defex,

I'm getting there I think, the wire trick worked without frying the CPU  and I'm now getting close to running it at 133 fsb, but I was wondering, could you post some benchmarks of your system? Like sandra cpu benchmark and/or multimedia benchmark? I'm curious on your results and this way I could compare my results once I got it running stable.

Greetz and thx in advance

YES YES,

I have the damn thing running at 1600 mhz with no sweat. the vcore is now 1.825 volt and the temp is idle : 47 degrees C and full load (burn in sandra) 50 degrees C. This is with two extra case fans (one in, one out) and with the stock heatsink and fan. But for safety measures I'll get myself that global win wbk38 fan/heatsink so I get the temp down a couple of degrees. I'll also do some more intensive testing over a longer period of time and let you guys now the results. If this is working I really have a killer rig on my hands imagine a full fletched pIII 1.6 Ghz COOOOOL ISN'T IT!!

http://www.neutron7.com/images/bench/celeron2.jpg

thats at 1555 or so its working nice, i gave it a few more mhx and its fine..must have burned in a bit.

as you can see the memory bandwidth still sucks big time..my p4 beats everything nicely

Interresting trhead.....

I'm thinking of upgrading my ASUS p2b-vm p3 500 mhz...

Would celeron 1100 or 1200 overclocked like this be better then a p3 1ghz for my pulsar.. i hope i can get my hands on a ASUS culs-c otherwise a tusl2-c...

And would it be a big improvment to what i have now..

Hi there,

Got the new fan installed, it's a global win copper shim one, and added a tt 6*6 5000 rpm silent fan. this brought temps back to 43 degrees idle and 46 degrees under full load. So I can finally say I have a stable PIII 1.6 Ghz running

Yes this is definitily better than a PIII 1 Ghz cause in fact the new celerons (1.2) and above are based on the same core as the tualatins. If you want to go this way you have to go for a tusl2-c cause the cusl doens't have the voltage settings to do this, I'm not even sure a tualeron runs on a cusl mobo without heavy modifications.

So far so good, specs are looking great I'll post them tomorrow (I hope to get it done by then)
