Can't enable DMA

I have the first Athlon751 hybred AMD Northbridge and Via Southbridge. ASUS K7M mobo. While updating mobo I got an ATA driver into my PCI bus master controller and both HDs no longer have the DMA option. I read the suggestion in "Infinite Vortex" to uninstall the ATA driver but when I tried loading the "Standard IDE dual controler" I got an error message the "cache could not write driver." I was barely able to get Windows going again by selecting a VIA driver in Safe Mode. How can I get DMA back?

you should be able to do it with the update driver command in control panel/system/device manager/disk drives. don't know why that wouldn't work...

I went to Disc Drive in Device manager and at the choose your own prompt, I got a selction of "Disc Drive", no other choices. Clicking next says " windows will now etc."
I even went to IBM to get an update and loaded a firmware DFT file onto floppies. At instalation I got a message: "your drive does not need updating.
I still can't get a DMA check box in settings of Hard Disc.

I think it is because AMD use its own "driver", I don´t have it either.

AMD may have it's own driver, but when I try to load AMD updates I get a message, "no AMD components" I used to have a DMA check box. It went away when this ATA driver arrived

I've since heard that ATA drivers set DMA by default but don't display a DMA check box in Disc Drives. Now my question is, should my AMD computer even have ATA drivers?

Since hard drive communication passes thru the south bridge, and your south brigde comes from VIA, you should not use AMD ATA drivers. And that is why, it will not install. Wery nice, that the installer protects you from this

Thanks for your info. At "infinate Vortex" they say that ATA drivers are from Intel. That's why I don't think they belong on my AMD computer, unless that's the only driver VIA uses.
I'm not going to worry too much about it. I'm just trying to optimize my computer.

Do not install a 4in1 (well, if you do, just make shure not to install the AGP driver). The AGP driver is the only thing, you will need from AMD.

I do not know, wich OS you are running, and I do not know, if the 3,14 IDE miniport driver is XP only (the newest IDE-drivers are not implemented in any 4in1 yet). But they have a forum too - you can always ask for advice there.

ATA drivers are from Intel, if you use a motherboard with an Intel chipset - otherwice they are not. But Infinitevortex only sells systems with Intel chipsets nowadays, so maybe that leads to the missunderstanding?
