Strange boxes surrounding numerical and text displays...
i have a little display problem with my luna os where ALL numerical and text entry spaces have these odd boxes around them. it makes things hard to read at times and looks kind of cludgy (see the inline image), but it is only one of many superficial qualms i have with the luna os on my older macintosh.
<img src="http://planetz.ghostwheel.com/pub/pulsa ... l_smpl.jpg">
cw tech support doesn't have a clue. well at least their canada/usa tech support doesn't.
i emailed them hoping to find out if a later os would fix this, and brought up a few other superficial problems i have.
the grand reply i got was.... "you may have a virus". pffft!
i'll try the german tech support address, but. anyhow. i'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced these boxes, and maybe some tips to remedy them. i will probobly update to 3.1 in the next 6 months, and am thinking that maybe some of my superficial problems will be resolved in the update.
i am running an elektra, os 2.52 on a macintosh 7500 w/ g3 300, os 8.6, 192mo ram. no other cards but the elektra, using ALL built-in subsystems. yes, even the wimpy 2 megabyte built-in video. it works fine, as i don't do much of any graphics work or gaming. i will probobly in the future put some sort of pci video card in it, but that isn't an option right now.
thanks for any suggestions.

well, if it is a virus, then pulsar v3.01 got it out of my system. i had them too, when i first started out with pulsar. i think i still had it in v3, but now with 3.01 it's gone
enlarging the routing window makes me roll my eyes, switching between cubase and pulsar gives me bits of cubase graphics where my pulsar mixer is supposed to be (fixed just by clicking somewhere), ... as long as the music comes out of my speakers i can live with that, although i would like to see it fixed (don't know if it's a bug or my system: B/W G3 450Mhs, 512Mb, ATY rage 128y 16Mb display card)

I don;t have a mac, but I noticed a few weeks ago someone else posted a screen grab and I saw the same odd type. It caught my attention wondering what it was, but saw mac and thought "ah, that's how macs must display".
If it was a pc I'd say you'd fiddled with the default system fonts. Do macs have any system fonts options ? Maybe that's a clue ?

this is good to hear borg!
i'm curious, do you have problems "hiding" pulsar? it recently occured to me that when i do this - and then reveal the luna os - the graphics get messed up. big black borders around everything, windows are chopped off, parts of the display which "catch" anything dragged over them, drawers that when closed leave a "ghost" image of when they were open.
after doing this the graphics can be fixed as you mentioned by clicking around the screen, dragging windows around, or closing and reopening, but still some problems persist.
if i don't "hide" luna, the display behaves perfectly. although i don't like how that menu bar covers up the desktop.
but as i recently and quite suprisedly discovered, the menu bar can be dragged from the top to the bottom of ones screen. either i overlooked this in the manual or there is no mention of it. sent me for a loop when i discovered it inadavertanly. i was working on a modular patch merrily as can be...battling with those retarded menus that pull down when you pass your cursor over them (grr), and i fidgeted my mouse around clicking furiously trying to get them to close, and the menu bar disappears. i was staring at awe at the interface less luna os. like...ohhh my gawd! i was so focused on that missing and known menu bar that i totally didn't realize it had moved to the bottom of my screen. i finally got it after a few reboots and then finally seeing the menu bar at the bottom:)
anyhow...thanks to both for your insights.

sounds all very familiar, castol, ... yeah, i can still laugh. i don't know any better. this is my first real computer based system, if you don't count in my atari. someone's having a look at my system at the moment. i hope to get a mail back soon. maybe then i can give you further advice. does anybody know why it is so hard to make the devices bar at the top (or bottom

any way, let's wait and see what the new soft version will bring.

thanks for the suggestion spirit.
indeed i have taken out all uneccesary fonts from my system folder.
luna seems to have a prefrence on what font it uses, but its not the same as what i set in the appearance control panel.
so far 3 different fonts were used after enabling disabling groups of them.
arial looks the best (which i hadn't had enabled prior to your suggestion). the other two (which i'm not entirely sure what they are nor, do i have the patience to figure out right now) look considerably worse. one being over sized and and the other had these odd lines above the names of devices in the project window.
no difference in the boxes though.
i'm curious, how does this font seletion work? and what font is reccomened for use?
i don't think this is mentioned in the manual, or is it? its hard to know as it is split up into so many sections and there is no index.

i don't like these kind of jokes!!!On 2002-03-19 07:24, Spirit wrote:

would a 'faster' video card, or one with more ram or whatever, make a difference concerning the abovementioned probs?

the lunatics are in the hall

using ALL built-in subsystems. yes, even the wimpy 2 megabyte built-in video. it works fine
It doesn't work fine
2 megs of video ram is insufficient to run pulsar, the red flag is when you restore after minimizing and you have display corruption

sometimes i had problems with picture when i run more programs together.
pulsar + gigastuio + cubase/battery + (sometimes) wavelab.
then i had problems with picture in cubase - specialy with battery (very similar this picture), but i can't remember that i ever had problems in pulsar - yes, sometimes had "slowmotin" when cpu goes about 70%!
how many programs you run together, which programs.... do you have this problem in all situations!?

don't you just love editing your posts?
heh.
well, i guess i overlooked this spec requirement. the thought didn't even cross my mind that video colors would have this kind of effect on a program. in the past when i've tried running 256 colors with a program meant to use thousands, the colors just look strange...but nothing as specific and all round as these boxes have occured
another thing is that i am used to seeing display colors as 256, thousands, and millions. so seeing 16 bit didn't really register with me.
anyway, thank you all for your help. i almost turned my intial post into a creamware bashing...but thought again.
the reply i got from cw tech support kind of ticked me off initially, but i understand what subhuman says about not ever having seen a problem before and trying to help someone with it. still, i think the individual who replied could have been a bit more composed and professional about it.
so...in order to get millions of colors i'll have to buy a video card or add some video memory to the built-in video. contrary to what people have said about the wimpy onboard graphics i'll still give it a shot before buying a card. its 25 bucks for 2! megs of this video memory and i can run at a higher resolution with it.
and its still cheaper and easier to pick up this memory for the built-in video than doing a bunch of research into used or new cards, tracking down the appropriate adapter for it (running an applevision monitor with apples old proprietary connector), and getting it running .
i really don't have any problems with graphics sluggishness expcept when programs get low on memory or the processor load gets up close to 100%, in digital performer. luna is allways a little slow, the modular can get VERY slow, when all cables are shown for a large patch. but in general i find its reasonable to work with. i usually am only running 2-4 applications at the same time. Luna, Digital Performer, and one or 2 of 4 other programs. Bias Peak, SP Remote, Qwerty Midi Keyboard, and Iomega Tools.
i'll post a follow up when i pick up the video memory, and or a card.
again...thank you all.

i figer i'll post a follow up here, in case anyone may find this info in the future usefull.
yes it is true, 1000's of colors on a mac produces these strange boxes, on the pc, cw tech support said that things look a lot worse in 1000's of colors and is more obvious to them of the problem (unexperienced tech support?). i also came to find that a 3rd party developer had this problem noted in an FAQ on their site (can't remember whoo, azymute?).
so, now i have my 5 dollar (hah!) video card (ixmicro twin turbo 128m2) with a whopping 4mb of of video memory and no silly adapters cause the card has apple db and vga connectors. i picked this one because apple used an identical (no vga however) card as an oem part in their powermac 9600. i would have taken an 8mb one, but i was feeling a bit to cheap and didn't really care after finding that it would run millions of colors and higher resolution than my onboard video. th 4mb one, that is. i found out though my monitor only supports up to 1024x768, which i'm running at now. anyhow.
i initially jumped on a better card for about the same price (#9 imagine 128 S2, anyone remember those guys of yar past?). pretty interesting that this card i came to find out was one of the FIRST cards out with an accelerated 3d graphics engine. the company died relatively quickly however.
anyways....after a crash course in monitor/video card technologies and some more digging on the card i found out that it only sync'd on green.
of course like NO monitors support sync on green hardly any longer. my mac monitor included (although it has a seperate sync bnc input which i discovered around back).
so after a few days of deliberating on finding a sync adapter which would have turned this card into one big $80 hassle, i just backed out of the deal (the seller was gracious, he didn't know himself about the card).
so now, i'm happy. the new video card works great, some strange behaviors nothing drastic, not a whole lot of graphics speed increase, but a bit.
