Creamware Elektra will not install
I bought a creamware elektra about 2 months ago and put it into my computer (a dell P4, ok I know that was a bad idea) I got an installation error message - "system error: timeout waiting for acknowledge from dsp 0"
I called creamware and they told me I had a motherboard problem. So I did some research and ordered a new computer. While I was waiting I stuck the card into another computer - (an HP celeron 667) which was way underpowered, but I was curious. I got the same message.
My new computer arrived a few days ago -
it's vitals are: intel P4 MB KD850GB 1.6GHz
1024GB RIMM, seagate 80GB IDE ATA100, ATI 4xAGP video card.
I eagerly install my creamware elektra and...same message.
I've changed the PCI position on all 3 machines...there are no IRQ conflicts that I know of... I called the creamware tech (and since I didn't have my computer with me) got nowhere. Two subsequent calls have gone unanswered.
Can anyone help me with this? Is the card defective? I can't return it, I've had it to long. I would like to become a creamware geek, but I can't unless the card starts working...

1. Which version of the software did you install... let me suggest, if you have a V3.0 key, to download the Luna V3.01 software for your ELektra.
Did you install the driver? Which version? I wouldn't put on less than the Version 2.5 (free version) which you can download on Creamware's website.
2. Did you install the driver before starting the Creamware application?
Give us some more details... list your IRQs if you can, assign the Elektra to it's own IRQ (usually in the BIOS of your computer).

I installed the version that came with it, which I believe was 2.02? Or something like that... it wasn't 3.01. I don't have a 3.0 key. I did download it a couple weeks ago.
I'm not sure what the driver version is - I'll have to check when I get home tonight.I couldn't find the 2.5 driver on creamware's site. What's it called?
I installed the driver before starting the program.
Right now the elektra is on IRQ 3. I'll have to get the rest of the IRQ assingments later.
Oh - I'm running this all under win 98 - the dell was running ME... don't know if that means anything

First, never bother with included drivers.. with pretty much ANY hardware (this includes motherboards, videocards, etc). They are almost always old versions, new versions fix bugs and issues.
Next, go to the Creamware website and register your board. If you have already, login to the "My Page" section of the Creamware website, and click on Serial Numbers. If you bought the card new only 2 months ago, you should definitely have a V3 key - all new cards purchased after Oct2001 should have this.
Finally download the software - Look in the "Luna" section. Download V2.5 if you dont have a V3 and aren't entitled to a free one, download V3.0x if you have the V3 key in your page. There is another, separate download in addition to the Luna software for the PowerSampler/Elektra.
(Elektra=Luna2+Modular2)
(PowerSampler=Luna2+STS3000)
Then, INSTALL THE DRIVER first.
Finally, install the latest version of the Luna software, checking the appropriate box if you have Elektra/Powersampler (Mod/STS).
Should be good then but you'll want to further optimize your machine for audio, reply back once you've done this post.

well it only took a week and a half to download all that stuff. I do have an authorization key for 3.01.
the luna install gets about a third of the way through then gives the message, "please insert disk #4 in floppy" ???????
so I'm nowhere on this.
should I waste another week and a half downloading all this again? Hey - it's only been three months already...
I absolutely don't know what to do.
ps: this has been the worst experience I've ever had vis a vis hardware/software in the 12 years since I first bought a computer. Is this par for the course with creamware?

#4 is refering to download 4 that you got from Creamware's site, each of the 25mb files gets a disk number. Sometimes the install program will ask for the next disc to be install in the floppy drive, at that point browse to the directory that you unzipped download #4 to. With w98se you might not be able to browse and you will need to type the file location manually.
ok -
I got luna 3.01 and modular 2 installed, although I've got a Luna Icon now instead of an Elektra one...I don't know if that means anything 'cause I still can't open the program. In fact I'm getting the exact same error message I've always gotten. The software is still not communicating with the hardware.
I'm going to give the creamware tech another call. Any suggestions?

Yes. You will now run Luna software, and pretty shortly, you will actually be running SCOPE FUSION software (all cards will use the same basic routing environment). The Elektra(Modular2) or PowerSampler(STS3000) will simply be a device you connect up inside of the Luna or SCOPE FUSION environment. This is actually really cool - initially, the 3DSP cards weren't going to be given such flexibility.
So, the error message you give seems to indicate an improperly installed card and/or software/drivers.
When you installed the card - did Windows automatically find it and ask for drivers? If it didn't - then good chance the card wasn't properly installed physically.
Calling Creamware support without being infront of your computer is excuse me, really pretty funny
How do you expect them to help you if you can't try some things out?
It could be bad hardware - only working directly with Creamware support WHILE by your machine, will you find this out. Bad hardware is really, really rare, Creamware is pretty good here. And if it is a problem with the card they are really good at replacing it quickly.
So again... the procedure to try is as follows:
1. Remove ALL TRACES of the software (except the Install files) from your machine. Look in the manual, it gives details on even scrubbing the registry. Here's what it says in the Pulsar manual (so it might be different for Luna/Elektra)

-- Click on START -Programs -Pulsar -Uninstall. [Automatic]
-- Delete C:WindowsInfPulsar.Inf (or Scope.Inf or Pulsar2.Inf)
-- Delete C:WindowsInfOtherCreamware*.inf
-- Delete C:WindowsSystemScope.Drv
-- Delete C:WindowsSystemVaxed.VXD (Not responsible for broken stuff... this is from the manual, be sure to verify yourself)

2. Now, turn off your machine. Install the card into a free PCI slot, firmly until it is entirely seated.
3. When you turn on your machine, Windows should ask for a driver. For V3, point it to Luna3driverwin9x or similiar.
4. Reboot after the driver is finished installing.
5. Install the Luna3 software with Elektra(Mod2) key.
6. Reboot (just to be sure)
7. Run Luna. It should work now. If not, call support while you are in front of your machine. If its hardware, they will work it out quickly.

well, Creamware replaced the card after determining that it was, in fact, defective.
The new one installed easily, and after smashing my head against the manual for a few days, I got it working with cubase.
So everything's ok, life is good!
You're gonna laugh, but I'm actually going to be using this not with cubase but with
digital orchestrator , an old, obsolete sequencer. It treats the modular just like any old midi synth - it works great!
