I just read this article in Computer Music Magazine where a reader wrote about the virtues of Win98lite and how his system runs silky-smooth because of certain aspects of Windows not cluttering up his system.
I was wondering if applying your wonderful Optimising tips (I mean it!) gave us users the same performance as just using Win98lite.
I put all your tips in application and I found myself with a great machine for making music.

98Lite is a great utility for removing unwanted Windows "features", highly recommended. But beware of the "Micro" installation option which uses the explorer.exe from Windows95 - it creates problems with a lot of applications. Better to use the "chubby" (I know!) option.

a standard Win98 is quite tweakeable, you can make it very lean -but it takes some years of pc study. Tips like Subhumans' will give major improvements. I've been applying about the same things on every Win98 install.
How comes I could run more with my P90 than my friend with his P200? Cos he had all fun screensavers, rotating desktop wallpaper, exclusive graphics etc. Just install the stuff you use, get rid of all the rest.
Taking LAN off your pc might greatly improve your performance. Imagine, no need for IExplorer, firewall, anti-virus, messenger services,... you could use the old pc to surf. But then again, what are you gonna do with but data transports? 2 cd writers? Swap one over 2 pc's?
I tend to disable LAN, firewalls and anti-virus when working with audio. If I make real big projects >:P<

Out of my own experience I can definitely recommend 4 things to do to get win98 up, running AND stable, provided you use a separate win98 for your DAW:
1. run 98lite Pro (you'll have to buy it first) to reinstall win98 and leave out everything but the bare necessities. In case you need more, like the odbc.dll in my case, you can install the needed module (DAO in this case). DO NOT install Internet Exploder, media player, outlook express etc... Rule of thumb for me was: if I don't need it to use Logic/Pulsar I don't install it.
2. Disable everything in device-mgr you don't need (LAN, USB, COM2, SCSI-for-scanner). You don't want to use unnecessary interrupts and more important, you don't want to hog your PCI-bus. For that reason avoid using SCSI-disks. Even some IDE RAID controllers use the PCI bus!
3. Run through the tips in this forum, most of them are also found on infinitevortex.com
4. Avoid Pulsar starting everytime you boot your Win98. Better start it when win98 is completely up. (done by disabling the background project in Pulsar)
I have not experienced one singe lockup or crash since my win98 was setup like this. (running on a very stable Abit TH7-II, the one without RAID, and a P4/1.7)

I use 98lite (micro) for more than a year now. it too some time but I now have zero problems and the fastest OS available current version is 4.5
you can apply all the tweaks from the optimisation threads around here with no problems.
there are few more things that you have to do in order to get your micro version stable.
among them is to install the aspi for 95, change stacks size....
what where applications you had problem with?
i use 95 desktop with 98lite for about 2 years now and had no problems for now. same with my friends machines.
i don't use micro install tho' as i left help system and couple of other things i thought could be useful. sorry for not being specific but it is more than a year since last reinstall on my sound machine
only program that was impossible to install was Acid 3 which requiered IExplorer to be installed. too bad for Sonic Foundry...
I had some problems with the 95 desktop in 98 Lite on an older slower computer (not the one I use for music) and I fixed them all by installing some software over (including ie). Maybe I lost the speed benefit by doing this, but everything seems pretty stable now. I have my system backed up to 2 CDs I made with drive image 4.0 so even if my hard drive dies I can get back to where I was within an hour.
