WIndows 8.1 / XITE-1 Link Please

Post by dawman »

I have screwed up again doing back up and file management.
Allowed M$ back into my PC for updates and now I get that hardware 30 cannot start Scope crap.
Could someone please point me to the link I used when I first upgraded from 7 to 8.1...?

Thanks

It was a step by step tutorial thing.

Just make sure the PCIe card is still seated well. I have a bare motherboard on my desk at the moment, and the PCIe is swimming in a 16x slot until I can make the custom case around it all.

Short story: moving things around the desk bumps the card, and I always get the Hardware30 error. I have to re-seat the card, and reboot.

Just 1 possibility. Could be software gone bonkers though.

Yeah it's seated fine.
I always check first but this time it said to upgrade the software too.
Then I noticed 8.1 did something.

You might be able to un-install the updates you did (by date). Also in the taskbar speaker icon, does it show up in playback and recording devices (as default)? You could try making sure those are checked and goosing properties, advanced, test at the correct sample rate. I've had 8.1 revert back to the on board sound driver and had to re-enable Scope more than once by goosing the props.

Or else it could be your lucky day. Sucks when others are counting on you. I'll keep a good thought, Jimmy.

again, this point out the insanity of always upgrading a working system, or rather, NEVER upgrade a working system.

if there are new features that one MUST have, then fine. if there is a serious bug-fix, then fine. otherwise, since the internet REQUIRES constant security updates to keep bad folks out of your machine, just use a different computer for browsing the web. the second computer can be purchased for little to no money and the benefit is that you can just run your music machine as it is for YEARS and YEARS without fooling with it.

Doesnt that depend on individual cicumstance ? In a Pro studio, sure - have a production machine hardly touched and a backup redundant system as well.

But for a hobbyist / enthusiast, keeping up to date is part of the enthusiasm - like a race car enthusiast who fiddle with the parts to get best possible performance.

In Jimmys case for example, if he screws his DAW Im sure he can still gig w/ Solaris.

hey, as i always say, if the priority, what you REALLY enjoy, is messing with the computer, then knock yourself out!

if you are more concerned with producing music, then focus on that.

improvements are one thing, but computers are rarely improved. more like things are fixed and rebroken so that a stream of steady income for the maker will continue. if anything else that took so much money in your life, plumbing, televisions, refrigerators, furniture, shoes, lamps, etc actually needed to be replaced over and over just to get them to work, there would be riots....

i used to build race cars, believe me, when you build something, you want it to work. yes, you tinker, but then you get the car working and you campaign it. also, a race car enthusiast doesn't expect his high performance vehicle to be the everyday grocery-getter either. again, i'm not saying that one shouldn't make improvements in one's system, i'm just saying "why does a freaking music machine need endless security updates?" and "why does a machine to make music also have to make cocktails and surf the net when it would be much cheaper and waste a lot less time to just have another computer to do those extra functions?". a perfect example is the windows update that broke your use of some DAS plugins, dante. why do those updates even need to be done, except for internet security?

also, if Jimmy messes up his computer, he's screwed, Solaris or not. sure, he can get by with less, but what's the point?

My priority, as a hobbyist, is the best sound and workflow. Ive achieved that by doing the upgrades, and hobbyist / pro need a different redundancy strategy for sure, but doing updates and getting a great production aint neccessarily mutually exclusive.

that's nonsense.

you make it sound like some kind of philosophical debate!

as i said, IF THERE IS A GOOD REASON FOR THE UPDATE, SOME IMPROVED FUNCTION THAT YOU NEED, DO IT!

at some point, you end up with a working system that does what you need. it doesn't matter if you are a pro or a hobbyist.

i also said, YOU WILL HAVE LESS TROUBLE WITH INTERNET APPS AND SECURITY MESSING UP YOUR WORKING SYSTEM, IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT MACHINE FOR BROWSING THE NET FOR FUN.

why the hell should a security update totally fubar your working system?

last, i said IF YOU REALLY JUST LOVE MESSING WITH THE COMPUTER MORE THAN MAKING MUSIC, KEEP CHANGING THINGS!

i don't see how this can be argued in any way. YOU DON'T GET ANY IMPROVED FUNCTION WITH MUSIC APPS DOING OS SECURITY PATCHES(usually, but in that rare case, you will know it ahead of time).

there is a stupidity that comes with software that says every update is an improvement. anyone who has used a computer for more than 10 years knows this is crazy, because that person has had updates that totally screw everything.

i love you dante, but let's not have a debate about things we don't even disagree with. i'm not chastising you, neither with reason or without. i'm just making generalized public statements for whomever it might help. i really don't care what anyone uses. we can get into what i DO have a problem with or what i DO hate, but in this thread, it doesn't make much sense. :)

So what OS should we all run and stay on then ? And should it be 32 or 64 ?

Actually, I have a better idea.

How about creating a 'System Updates' forum ?

what ever you like. if you keep changing things, expect a small amount of instability.

Yepp, that was the link and thanks.
I just made a 2nd spare for a rainy day.
Everything was fine until I let M$ back in.

Now it's clean as a lean dick dog, no anti virus, no internet, no nothing.
Also added Omnisphere 2 and Zebra2 HZ to this rig.

FWIW My XITE-1 Serial Number 0001 will be for sale as soon as I get the new XITE.
I want a stock machine, using stock plugs.
So mine has everybody's Plug Ins.
Once I find out the permission to sell it with Plug ins I will post it.

Probably go for 2500 w/ plugs.
Definitely a sore dick deal.........you can't beat it.

Glad it all worked out. Thanks to gary and dante for the info and their incomparable love for each other. It's been awhile since we had the pleasure. :P

Now that new XITE would be in Kingly Black or does that only work in LA? Maybe gary and dante could deliver it, I heard they're opening in Vegas.
