how do I use the VDAT??

Post by bosone »

I was trying to record my take on VDAT into SFP window but I could not understand how to make it work...

I load the VDAT, connect the mix output to channels 1,2 (the meters seem ok)
I create a tape
press record on the VDAT
press play on the sequencer

then, when I open the files crated by the VDAT; i don't see any audio on them!

why!!?

that's what I do but the files are always silent!
If i connect in and out like this

http://www.hitfoundry.com/issue_07/vdat_mst.htm

i hear the output, so the signal is coming but then it seems not to be directed to the wav files! :-O

Create a new tape with a new name. I have the same problem if I import an old tape.

But you haven't armed the tracks for recording!! After you create the tape you have to arm the inputs for record by pressing the button. They should blink red.

Yes, but there's nothing to playback because the waves files are always empty...

. What OS are you running ?
. OS 32 or 64 bit ?
. What permissions are set on the folder you set as output for VDAT ?
. Do files get written there after recording ? EG when you say files are empty do you mean they exist but are zero bytes length ?
. Does same thing happen if you remove said files and recreate tape in VDAT ?
. Are you running Scope as admin ?

It behaves that way for me sometimes, but only if I use the same tape.

Try from scratch and make the tape a few minutes long and 24 bit to see what happens.

a 1 minute Tape may fail, as a real tape has quite a large pre-recording area (2min or so) before the audio
I'm not entirely sure how they handle this as I assume to have created such small tapes myself before knowing the details
(or handling may have changed)

cheers, Tom

Just a thought for a last ditch effort. Maybe try hitting the installer again. I do it every so often when anomalies like that occur. Just have to resize the window again.
imho, not sure if it's worth worrying about though. I never found a use for VDAT as opposed to just recording in the DAW environment. Perhaps it's true about the sonic quality being superior though not that i'd be able to tell.

Thank you to everyone in this thread! In 12 years I never used VDAT until today. Very nice device. Sonar does sound great also but this can come in very handy. Wish I tried it so many years ago, I'm sure the difference would have been quite noticeable. :-?

Which version of windows and scope are you using? It really does work and I recommend you use it. Try getting a fresh Vdat file maybe it's corrupt or you're using the wrong version.
