ASIO or WDM for SONAR Platinum and SCOPE 5.1

Post by ronnie »

My apologies if this has been answered before or posting in the wrong place. I've searched through the forum and on the net but couldn't get a clear answer as to why the SCOPE 5.1 ASIO drivers only give me one input and one output and the WDM drivers give me the expected four and four (stereo - which, in Platinum are now actually labeled correctly so you see the mono and stereo choices). This may be a stupid question but I have not used SCOPE for almost 6 years but I recall having multiple IOs and not sure if thet were ASIO or WDM. I thought there was an advantage to using ASIO but if not I can stick with WDM as I cannot hear any difference of see any stability differences. Thanks in advance! I do not need to sync at anything higher than 48Khz if that is an issue.

never right-clicked the Asio-Module in Routing ? ;)
it will open and give access to all channel settings ...

Thanks Tom. Yup! I've done that and only get the expected 2 in 2 out (Stereo pairs). I forgot to mention that I'm on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit if that somehow has something to do with it.

you can drag the number up-down, if you point the mouse to it
(or click the number once and use left/right arrow keys)
admittedly not the most intuitive way of operation, but then ... :D
Asio channels aren't related to physical device properties

I use Sonar X3 Producer and I have no limitation like that. I can get more Asio channels than what you've posted. Do you have a older version of Sonar to test and deduce with?

EDIT- Astroman has the solution.

I do. I'll have to install it which I wasn't on planning to do. So you think it might be a Platinum issue? I've tried every ASIO module in 5.1 with no luck. I also can't seem to pull any external ADAT or Luna Zlink 24/96 IO box into Platinum Only route Wave and bringing in Wave creates bad noise. Feel so stupid.

you should use ASIO.

you need a matching pair of modules, like Asio2 32-64 source and Asio2 -64 destintation.
you can't change the type of module or the number of i/o without closing Sonar FIRST.
Sonar must always be closed when changing projects or ASIO modules or Sequencer midi modules.

you must select ASIO as the driver type in the Audio preferences in Sonar.

the ADAT modules connect inside Scope, they cannot be seen by Sonar. the ASIO modules are the audio JACKs for the Sonar application.

Sonar is no different than any other sequencer. the menus are a little different, but a sequencer is pretty much a sequencer. you might get some hints by looking at the articles about Scope with other sequencers here:

Thanks Gary but I'm not getting far. I'm able to get 16 ins and outs to WDM by loading Wave Modules and I can get 2 in and 16 out in SONAR with ASIO 24 Bit (loaded from the ASIO Pro Playback Example project) which has 8 channels in ASIO 24 Bit Source and 2 in ASIO 24 Bit Dest. If I load the Pro Recording Example project I get 6 ASIO 24 Bit Source and 6 ASIO 24 Bit Dest. which show up as 6 x 6 in SONAR.

I just can't get any ASIO (1,2, etc.) modules to come up in a new project with more than 2 x 2.

Ideally I would like to have 8x8 ASIO2 in SONAR!

BTW, forget about the noise issue... that was my bad with sloppy clock settings I forgot to reset in my ASIO madness.

just right click on the ASIO source and choose "surfaces" and then "open ASIO settings". you can click and drag to change the number of i/o to whatever you want, up to 64 in and 64 out. remember to have Sonar closed when you do this.

don't use the examples. set up your routing the way you want. the routing window is your friend.
-btw- click on the letters just behind the arrows on the connecting pads on each module. that's the sweet spot.

I finally figured it out!!!!! I AM AN IDIOT WHO FORGOT HOW GREAT SCOPE REALLY IS AND HOW EASY IT IS TO DO MUSICAL STUFF BY PUTTING THE TECHNICAL STUFF IN A SUPER INTUITIVE INTERFACE. Can over-zealousness cause insanity. Well, if so then I have nothing to lose!

Sorry I made you guys bang your head against the wall. Honest, I just plain forgot about it. Maybe there should be up and down arrows on the surface toast, I can't be the only moron out there.
