Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4 / ASIO
Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4 / ASIO
I'm about to upgrade my ancient Scope WinXP PC to Windows 7 (32-bit). It's been years since I installed a Windows machine so I just wanted to check if the following will work?
- install Win 7 on new HD
- install Scope 4 driver
- copy Scope folder from my old Win XP drive to the new HD
Thanks

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4
It is working here.
You need to tell windows 7 that Scope 4 is an "XP compatible" program and you need to run Scope 4 as "administrator". Then works fine

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4
Thank you petal for the useful tips! It's nice to know it's still possible to rock vintage Scope 4.
I'm going to do the install this weekend and will report back how it goes.

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4
Just reporting back on this - success!
I had a scary moment when I forgot about the XP compatibility mode thing - it was not fun seeing a 'hardware version 20 detected' error
But all is fine after reading petal's post again. So thanks again petal
Oh also I had to change the graphics card as Geforce MX4000 (AGP) isn't compatible with Win7, I replaced it with a cutting edge Geforce 6200 and all is well

I'm happy I could help

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4
Actually I spoke too soon, everything works except the ASIO - when I start Bidule or Vaz Modular (the only ASIO hosts I'm using on this system), I get the 'scope fusion platform is not running' error when I try to use Scope ASIO.
Any ideas?
-edit-
searching around I couldn't find any solution to this... is there any real reason why the 4.5 ASIO wouldn't work in Win7 32-bit? Updating to v5 is not really an option because I have a crazy number of projects I need to reload in v4.5 and it requires everything being pretty much the same.
Has anyone out there at all managed to do this?
Otherwise I think I'm gonna have to install XP on this new SSD
-edit 2-
yep something is very wrong with the driver - no wave devices working either. Everything looks ok in device manager and in the Scope project window but there's no way of getting any software audio at all. I'm new to Windows 7 so I have no idea if there's anything special I have to do to get audio working.

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4
well, if you get it working, that's great, but it's not really supposed to.
Creamware went out of business just as Vista was released. when v4 was made Vista/win7/win8 didn't even exist.
you shouldn't need to do anything special to get the ASIO driver working. for windows sounds, you'll need to go to the playback options by clicking on the speaker icon in the tray by the clock in windows. i believe windows sees the 2nd "speaker" as the first wave driver...

OK some quick googling turned up this post:

Sure enough I started Bidule in compatibility mode and it works. Problem solved, and all is well in the world again. Hope it helps someone. I edited the topic to help searchingI just found out that you need to configure both Scope and the sequencers in the same compatibility mode to work together. Weird. It's also only the ASIO drivers that function then, but at least it's something, I guess.

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4 / ASIO
I can confirm that you need to run both Scope (ASIO-driver platform) and your ASIO-host in the same compatibilty mode, then it works.
To be honest I didn't know this. I normally use my XITE for my ASIO-driver, not my PCI cards.
I run Scope v4.5 on my PCI-cards in order to get good perfomance in my Zarg-synth, and run the output through Adat to the XITE.
This works without having to run both Scope 4.5 and the ASIO host in the same compatibility mode, so I just assumed that it worked - shame on me.

petal - thanks for the confirmation
In other news, I may be getting somewhere with Wave drivers. By default, NOTHING was showing in Control Panel/Sound (no devices detected).
By chance I right-clicked in this window, there was the option to 'show disabled devices' - this was not enabled. Once enabled, a bunch of items appeared called 'Internal AUX jack'. After some quick tests I seem to be getting a signal from the 2nd one of these. Now I have to plug in all my audio cables and make sure that everything is performing properly but I'm cautiously optimistic.
-edit-
OK everything seems to work and sounds perfect without any pops/clicks etc.
The 2nd Wave driver is working for Windows system sounds, the stereo test at 16 bit 44.1khz played normally (as indicated in other threads) and in my case all the drivers are called 'Internal AUX Jack'. Very weird, I'm hoping I can rename it
I tested a 3rd Wave driver ok (corresponds to Wav Source 3 in Scope). The 1st driver definitely does not want to do anything. No big deal

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4 / ASIO
I have to give an update on this. Unfortunately it just was not possible to get this system stable with Windows 7. Maybe I don't know the right things to turn off (although I tried everything I possibly could), maybe it's because I'm running a mix of Gen1 and Gen2 cards but I was getting random freezes which made the system unusable for serious work. I tried with an old Nforce3 box and an HP XW4400 - the Nforce3 actually performed better but could still freeze at any time. I even got all Wave drivers working (including #1).
So I decided to try installing XP SP3 on the XW4400 and was pleasantly surprised as it installed to the SATA SSD with no problems whatsoever. I've been running SSDs with non-Trim-enabled OS's for years (OSX 10.6) so I'm confident that there will be no issues with XP. So if this is something you're thinking of doing I can recommend it. I'm perfectly happy in XP as Win7 really didn't seem to add much except more complexity and a new driver model rendering old stuff obsolete. I think the nicest thing about it was being able to pin apps to the taskbar but I can easily live without that.

That's the only thing I liked as well.
I often use a few hosts for certain workflows and it is nicer to have an uncluttered screen, or have to open up the start menu just to choose an app.

XP (32Bit) is good (enough) for most audio work and pretty stable !darkrezin wrote:I'm perfectly happy in XP as Win7 really didn't seem to add much except more complexity and a new driver model rendering old stuff obsolete. I regret I cannot update/upgrade NI Komplete 7 or Phead Reason 6.5,- but that PITA isn´t enough for me doing all the work installing all new just because of that "new OS needed because support ended" issue.
In fact, I´m still happy w/ XP also on my office machine while typing here !
Who needs MS security updates which were crap anywhere.
I don´t use MS Internet Explorer or Outlook Express,- and Firefox, Thunderbird and others still support Win XP,- at least until may next year or for longer.
Guess what,- I never catched a virus or malware until now !
It´s all marketing trick s##t !
We don´t need it.
Go Cockos Reaper when all the other hosts won´t work anymore w/ S|C SCOPE 5.1 32Bit and Win XP.
I´ll upgrade Windows when SCOPE 6 is out and needs at least Win 7.
I think, that will be when Win 10 is out or later ...

Track your stuff and type your mails on outdated machines w/ outdated OS,- it´s much, much cheaper and still works!
Be creative, have ideas and workarounds and enjoy life instead following the industries demands !
I appreciate SCOPE works on Win XP and realtime DSP, for me, it´s much more important than native VST.

Re: Installing Windows 7 / Scope 4 / ASIO
Yes I basically agree.. as long as you have your shit together security-wise (if the machine goes online), then there really aren't going to be any problems. I personally don't have internet enabled on that machine though (blank gateway setting) as I don't need it on there but even if you do, a decent firewall should cover most things as far as I know.
I actually believe there are ways of getting security updates for XP even now if you need them (they still exist because some companies/governments paid for extended XP support).
