Controlling Scope as Digital Mixer over wireless Midi

Post by MCCY »

Hi!
I put some old scope cards in my old computer and set it up as a digital mixer (such a cheap but absolutely professional and reliable soultion!!!). I recorded my musicclass in a concert which was great recording, but I wish I could control the mix which is done by scope in parallell while standing in front of them and listening how that all sounds in a big hall. (So in short: I record the dry microphones in reaper to mix it after concert, but do the live-mix with scope as a digital mixer which I'd like to control via ipod (I also would consider buying an android tablet if there is a good solution.).

I have no idea how to set up wireless midi. Can I connect one computer directly to another using wlan? I should install rtpmidi on the windows machine, right? But then I have no idea how to make my ipod communicate with the scope computer... I have no network in that hall we are playing, just my ipod & windows machine with wlan. Lemur seems to be fantastic, but touchosc & tbmidistuff seem to be absolutely sufficient for my needs. I just want to control about 32 parameters (16 would be minimum, 64 would be great of course, but anyway too much on the ipod display) via midi.

Is there any step by step video or description? What is an ad hoc connection?

Thanks

Martin

So hey... I could use my eeePC for that too?!?! I would just need a midi controller using that wireless midi... So copperlan would be a nice solution? WOW this could be much fun!!!!

So first thing I did now, was using the old vnc trick! GREAT! It's slow, but I have scope on my eeePC now :-) ... O.K., I can control it but while seeing everything. I bet this will be enough for a soundcheck. THIS IS PURE FUN!

Copperlan seems to be very easy! I managed to send midi from one reaper on one computer to the other one at the other computer, so I bet it will be easy to send hardware controll-messages to scope!

Great, everything works as it should. Now I could try with the ipod, but that does not bring too much new... & I hesitate installing the rtp thing in addition... Does that work in combination with copperlan???

Jippiejay!!!! Tried with the simple free app "symphonic evolution" and it works now IPOD => PC1 (rtp midi => copperlan) => PC2 ( copperlan => SCOPEmidi). I can control scope on second PC through the first PC via WLAN... wired!!! No, not wired :-) So I think I will buy a controller software for the ipod!

Can you elaborate as I have wanted to use an iPad as acontroller for a while just for articulations and prgm chng messages, on the Privia PX-5S it is designed to accept MIDI from iPad. BCF/BCR 200, etc.
Like to hear about Copperlan.
Have a dual MINI ITX idea in a short 1U I have thinking about using Copperlan.
Haswell prices will drop Ivy Bridge a little in pricing, but their associated mobos and peripherals will drop even more.
Just don't need the Haswell as only the GFX have improved and more energy / temps.
Bug Deal, I already 32C case temps, and 39C CPU temps.

I'm now using TB midi stuff on the ipod... It is a bit difficult to build complex controllers, but for building a small (8 faders & 3 controls + a keyboard for note messages is done in 10 minutes) MIDI remotecontrol it's perfect!
My pupils said, I should use "team-viewer". Great idea as alternative for vnc they said, so I will try it.

It's really that simple:
- Set up an ad hoc network between computers or computer-ipod (use fixed ips like 192.168.2.1 ...) (even found a trick to set up an ad hoc network on my w7 starter eeePC :-) )
- I installed rtp midi & copperlan, so with rtp midi I can get that wireless midi input from ipod
- for automating reaper this is allready enough, I activate the midi input within reaper for automation & everything's fine (Great, now I can start reaper from set markers via remotecontrol, while controlling the most important values like volume etc. That means standing in the middle of a theatre room and starting playbacks for the stage without any wire. Cool. (O.K. this is easily possible since hifi equipement uses remote controls, but I didn't use a cd for such purpose for a long long time now.) Didn't know that it it is so damn easy to make reaper respond to cc values in any way you want.
- for scope controlling I connect rtp midi to scope midi input via copperlan and voila! What a fantastic team! Copperlan is such a wonderful MIDI tool. I like all the handling very much. Completely selfexplaining and beautiful to look at and it simply makes all my midi problems of all times disappear. Now everything can talk to everything. You simply install it and after that you can route any midisource in your computer to everywhere!!!

Thanks for copperlan I will give that a try.

I used the ipad over wifi but tried connecting the router to the computer by Ethernet. Seems much more responsive and quicker.

The OmniTR ipad program for Omnisphere is just amazing. Creativity is so much easier when you have tools to help.

I'm using Smithson Martin's Emulator software on a Win 8 touchscreen with copperlan sending wireless midi to control Xite, daw, kyma and anything else that can be controlled by midi. Its a great performance setup
