(Win XP), It says it's shutting down and then just hangs there until I hold in the power switch.I suspect it has something to do with the ACPI? It just started acting this way.
Any tips would be appreciated. I just reformatted not too long ago and not really wanting to do it again soon.

Re: Computer won't shut down
I had something like this for a while about a year ago. My computer would eventually shut down but would take between 5-10minutes to do so. If I was in a rush to go out I had to use the power button. I did tons of research on potential fixes. None worked. Then one day it started working normally again. I have no idea what changed. The mysteries of technology.

has anything new been installed? updates?
Re: Computer won't shut down
You can try first to see if it can switch off with safe mode. Maybe it's a software that hang the computer.
Or maybe that thing

Re: Computer won't shut down
yeah I did do a windows update not too long ago but i'm not sure if it was doing it before or after. uuuuggh guess i'll try a restore before the updates and see if that fixes anything.
Not sure if using the pwr button is good for a stable operating system - I always wonder if I'm shutting it down right in the middle of something.
Thanks for the help.

Re: Computer won't shut down
it's not good to use the power button in that scenario, but what a ya gonna do?
see what's running before you shut down in the task manager.
as a near last resort, you can also try a repair install and then rerun the updates.
there are so many things that can be the source of the problem, including the power supply...

ooo, yeah right didn't think of the pwr supply. Didn't see anything weird in the task manager, I will try the repair install option.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Please, if you find the trouble, let us know what it was !
Re: Computer won't shut down
Solved! Problem turned out to be a Korg Nanopad hanging up the system. Latest driver, i'll just have to leave it unplugged i guess.
