commercial project on presonus studio one free

Post by kensuguro »

Just did a couple of quick incidental SE/music on presonus studio one free. Was in a pinch and didn't have anything to write on, so studio one being free (awesome) and also completely downloadable was great. It has a set of basic downloadable samples and some simple effects (no limiter, dammit), but was just enough to do simple sounds. Didn't even have a keyboard so mouse clicked notes into the piano roll. Just not sure whether Studio One free was supposed to be used commercially but whatever. Maybe next time I'll use scream tracker. I guess I'm also not allowed to say for what product it was. Perhaps after it's released.

Seems like Reaper would be better. It's not free but the demo does not expire also it's quite affordable for non-commercial use.

Ya, but reaper would just be too mainstream. Lol, i was trying to forcefully do commercial projects with underpowered software, as an experiment.

studio one was actually much well done that I'd thought. It's till ridiculous to have to pay that much for VST support, but the interface is quite nice, and there are small details that make the learning curve almost like nothing. So, it's definitely not a piece of software to look down on. It's great to see people put in thought and effort.. I also think that because their pro version is pretty robust, it wasn't started as a marginal project, but more of a power product, parred down to the free version.

But even with the fortunate abundance of commercial projects, I like testing the "less is more" concept. For artistic expression or "the best possible" context, these won't be sufficient, but for projects, where the goals are apparent, I don't think we always have to go out with the full armada. Right tools for the right job. There is a time and place for everything.

for the less is more approach a Tascam 4 or 8 track cassette (with dbx) could be revealing
... in sonic context, too
but Portastudio might be a misspelled SportaStudio, heavy as lead :D

Studio One is pretty high regarded here in Germany, the free version bundled with a lot of their stuff.

another Studio that comes to mind in minimal context is SAW-Studio Basic, but with a serious price tag ;)

cheers, Tom

lol, ya I had a 4 track too. Remember dubbing tracks to it from my SY99 and recording vocals. Might even be a good thing with one of those nostalgia projects.

seriously Ken, I recently watched some of those mixes on YT and noticed that you haven't a chance in hell to create exactly that sound in Cubase or whatever sequencer.
Mind you, the streaming data IS digital, so it's not the full analog package.
Something is mixed differently, though everyone tells it's just a simple addition and 'cannot be...' :D
I've been really tempted to buy such a machine to check it out... made me curious.

cheers, Tom
