Piano_5

Post by petal »

I've been messing around with this for a few days now, and I'm not sure what to do with it. It's still early in the process. fx. I'd like to work a lot more with the intonation of the pianopart, but on the other hand, the "midi"-feel does give the piece a certain kind of momentum. I'm not sure about the cello and violin either.
EQ'ing this right has been difficult and I'm now even close to where I want it.

In other words, I'm hoping to get some feedback on what you guys think would suit this work in progress :)

I hope you enjoy it regardless :)

The alternating left hand piano part sounds extremely mechanical. If this was used as a movie background I would think it was deliberately mechanical, so it depends whether that is an intended effect or not.

If not, you could introduce some subtle velocity changes into the piano part overall. EG some on-the-beat notes having a higher velocity than off-the-beat, and then a few bars later (or when the strings come in) reverse that so that the off-beat notes have a higher velocity. Then add a +/-5% random velocity change across the board.

That could add some intensity and pace to your piece. I have no probs with the string parts, they add flavour.

I liked it, very nice idea to start with :) ; I think it is worth to work on it. It feels very much like the beginning of a movie to me, like the intro for a university related kind of movie.

I think that the lowest note in the piano sounds too high, I mean, it has too much volume, I would like it to be about half the way from where it is now.

When the strings arrangement comes to life, I would like some radical changes in the harmony, but still under the same tempo in the piano, because this is the very reason of the mood of the song. And would make some violins sing long notes over it, rather than staccato.

Then I would come back to the first part of the song, without changing its harmony, and would put on top of it a oboe as the first melody (which you should still create over it) with rather longer notes too, and I would add a fagot to make some arpeggios in counterpoint with the piano, that would make a really cute tune.

Well, it is just an idea of what I would do, cheers.

Wow - thank you very much for such high quality feedback! Lot's og good ideas to work with. I think my first task will be to develop the left hand on the piano and steer it away from the mechanical feel it has now. Maybe even play it by hand.

The core idea in this was developed in a few hours, inspired by Philip Glass's and John Adams minimalistic compositions. An experiment with minimalistic compositional principals, which both worked but also produced the mechanical feel. I agree it needs to become more "humananized" before I continue develop the composition.

Anyways, thank you very much for the feedback!
