strings study with analog synth

Post by kensuguro »

I wanted to do a collection of strings arrangements to demonstrate some basic arrangement techniques. But as a twist, I used a simple saw->lowpass->amp synth with a best approximation to a strings sound. I tried square with a variety of pulse width but couldn't get it to sound right, so reverted to saw. The saw works good for cello and bass, but for violins it didn't have enough of a character to it.. I also opted not to do any cc automation. It's sort of a necessity for strings, but figured most people who just want to get started in strings arranging wouldn't want to mess with it.

I left out violas just for simplicity, you can see in some places I'm trying to make the cello part a viola part.

Anyway, check it out for some strings arrangement techniques. Uses 2 violins, cello, and bass. Goes through multiple styles, I also do alternative arrangements for same progression using different approaches.

I wasn't sure if I should write it out on staff, or maybe just midi is good enough. Not sure if these need explaining but if you have any questions about particular arrangement I'll be happy to answer.

Here are the names and quick explanation of what I'm doing
1. simple progression chord notes
2. simple progression melody
3. simple progression melody and syncopated comping
4. minor progression melody and lower register tension + 9th trills
5. minor progression percussive melody + counter melody
6. minor progression percussive unison
7. totoro melody + tension in all parts + flourishes
8. totoro octave unison + cello divisi (mostly just 3rds)
9. complex progression + 9th trills
10. complex progression + explicit melody -> harmony expansion
11. complex progression + punctuations
12. jazz chords + using chromaticism
13. emotional + thin arrangement -> thick
