ps the noise disappears when performing certain operations. suggests it can be got rid of. if it was interference from the fan i imagine the noise would be constant.
i posted about this problem a while back, but i didn't realise then it was only asio. i thought perhaps this new piece of information might help somebody figure it out.
creamware didn't have any answers either.

I have the same or equal problem with noise ( also not asio related )
my setup is:
asus p2b-vm ( onboard audio is jumped off )
pIII 500 mhz
320 mb ram
ati rage expert 2000 32mb
8.4 gb udma 5400 rpm
20 gb udma 7200 rpm
3com ethernet card
Usb disabled
Pulsar 1
pulsar 2 srb
I did all things suggested :
- Grounded hardware ( with out ground loop)
- I now have quatily cables on analog out ( that son't pick up interfirence )
- No cables are crossing each other
- no irq sharing ( both card on same irq)
Stil i have this =/- 800 hz tone and noise coming out.
It gets some kind of influence from my system, when hardisk is active or activation funtions in a software app. ( does not matter wich app. )
I also tryed the new sp/dif optical thru my mididisc and then to my amp and there was no noise at all. this means it is definately ad/da related. and for the reasons mentioned above it proves to my knowledge that the creamware hardware (ad/da)is picking up noise from insite the my computer.
This is the same in win98se with v2.04
as in win2000 with v3...
Same noise...!!!
The Creamware cards are sheilded they say so way is it pickup up this noise, could it mean that my card is broke and should be fixed or replaced by a new one ???
Cos this is intoleranble when i am monitoring my makings!!!
Thats all, Djody
buy the way i love the v3 update amazing improvements, hope the update wil solve all the little details....

when i record internaly and write it to cd and check it on a my system downstaires there is no noise.
But i find it very annoiing while creating that i' constantly get hamered by the noise, espesialy while designing sound at high volume. Then i tweak and hit my keyboard and in between i hear the noise.
For a pro audio card this is not OK at all
i expect it to by noiseless.
An other point is that i can not use outboard hardware thru the analog outs cos then i get the noise in my mix!!! that's bad.
I think i tryed every suggested solusion. so if no one has a new thing to try i guess i have to be going thru the creamware support jungle to get rid of this Problem.
I,m goin to post this also at creamware forum, maybe ingo or somebody else from creamware can help me out on this one..
Cheers and good luck, Djody

I have a strong guess that you have DirectX 8.something beta installed, right? That has issues with DirectDraw.
I use DirectX 7(latest final version), and do not have this problem.
Also update your video card BIOS, update your video card drivers, uninstall the version of directX you have, and use the latest version your video card mfg suggests/endorses.

FWIW, i have my OS set up with no direct x whatsoever.
98lite micro on CUSL2 with GX450 video, PslrII, Luna, and Cubase, & misc utilities, goodies.
never had any problems due to lack of DirectX, but its a pure DAW box, with very few apps installed. nothing I use (at least for the moment) seems to have a problem with the lack of DXx.
I believe there are plenty of other hardware and software thingies around which do need it, so this may not be an option for everybody. My point is simply that depending on what you use its possible to live without DirectX and its attendant problems.
