Newbie questions from long time scope user

Post by broken_halo »

Well , for some reason I tend to come up with these questions in my head as to "why" I do certain things within scope then I can not come up with answers for myself!!! I have been using scope for about 8 years but where I live there is literally no one else that uses this platform. SO , I tend to just go along with things that work , never questioning but I thought I would just for some clarification on some things so here goes !! Oh yea just short list of my signal chain

mindprint envoice mkII -> A16 Ultra -> Scope project dsp -> Scope 5.0 (internal : STM2448 -> asio -> Sonar 8.0 Producer ---> end)

First off , I am mainly doing mono inputs so when I go to IN 1 (no stereo selected) and my direct out 1L -> Asio IN1L would this be considered a truly mono setting? All my tracks in Sonar are mono and I just have never questioned if there was something I was not doing that may be influencing my signal negatively.

Also , my asio seems to work fine , I adjust the latency respectively between my recording and mixing stages (6ms @ 48.8 for record and 10-18ms @ 48 for mix , depending on size of course) Is this considered normal practice?

On another note , I always have the "phase compensation" switch enabled on my 2448 , for me it seemed to be a no brainer but perhaps I am not using this setting properly , advice?

I know these may seem like fairly amateur questions but they are quite important none the less , I have had good to great results with my recordings and to be honest scope is really the only platform I will ever use. But complacency kicks in over time and I stick to my standard routine and never wonder how my signal could be affected.

With so many different "correct" ways to do things I understand nothing is definitive , but Scope is a totally different monster of which I am sure we are all aware , it has its nuances and quite "fussy" ways of handling its audio.

For me , having the most proper signal chain is what is most important. I want to know that the signal I am sending from my pres is not being degraded or changed in any other way then what I define inside of my comps and eqs in scope. The more I thought about it the more unsure I was if I am doing the whole mono connection correctly (I would send a screen shot but am away from the studio comp)

I know you guys on here are geniuses at this stuff and it really is the best place for scope users to get informed. Hopefully this question will not only help me but the new , fledgling users to scope , as I would be sure that most of their recordings would be mono as well IMO.

Cheers and thanks for the info!

yes, it's mono.

i use 4ms@44.1k for everything, but there's nothing wrong with your practice what-so-ever...

i also keep phase compensation on. this merely assures phase aligned inputs. it may or may not make a significant difference, but i agree, it a no-brainer, unless you are strapped for resources(it take extra dsp to run the phase compensation).

don't be embarrassed to ask, be embarrassed to have a tool and not learn how it works. :wink: :lol:
