Indian women lead the way
Indian women lead the way
Fair representation is set to take a step forward.
India's parliamentary upper house has overwhelmingly approved an historic bill that would reserve one third of seats in the national and state legislatures for women.

If only my country would be so bold.

i think respect for women is a great thing, but making part of the government female by mandate will only lead to a new kind of corruption.....jmo...
morality can't be legislated. it must already exist in the hearts and mind of the people.

I believe that it is now confirmed that no women are reading these forums...

Perhaps it's a benefit to both women and men.petal wrote:I believe that it is now confirmed that no women are reading these forums...

That there are no women here? How misogynistic!braincell wrote:Perhaps it's a benefit to both women and men.petal wrote:I believe that it is now confirmed that no women are reading these forums...

Isn't this though an example of the kind of resistance to change that keeps the current ratio of representation in place?garyb wrote:i think respect for women is a great thing, but making part of the government female by mandate will only lead to a new kind of corruption.....jmo....
If, as you assert, there is already corruption then expanding this corruption so it has a fairer representation is really not an obstacle
I believe we all have a morality but maybe this is just me and I see that sometimes an idea needs to be voiced to be followed. I agree legislation is a lazy messenger but it does give a message an airing when as in this case it is being so stiffled.garyb wrote:morality can't be legislated. it must already exist in the hearts and mind of the people
Equality for all and be damned. If it all goes wrong then I guess it will be legislated against.
There sure have been worse ideas.
It is very likely this legislation will meet so much resistance it will never see the light of day or indeed remain influential for very long.
Only time can tell

We have a rule that you have to be over 35 to be president. That is rather arbitrary.
Re: Indian women lead the way
nope, the government can't make people be good, especially when scoudrels make up a good percentage of the government. this is just a smokescreen. making a certan percentage of "representitives" female is no assurance of sensible government(Indira Ghandi or Maggie Thatcher's administrations should point that out). women can also be ruthless and cruel. in general, though, i AM for women in government. in general again, and with specific exceptions, there's no need for women to do everthing that men do.
you know, my wife will attest, that women are NOT men's equals. that doesn't make one more valuable than another or make it right to abuse anyone, but equal is a mathematical word meaning "the same as". women and men are NOT the same. this is not a justification to overpay or underpay or for disrespect. it's just that i like the differences...the reason men and women pair up is that each has strengths and weaknesses that are balanced by the other. try really treating a woman like a man and see how she really likes it...
nope, it's the people that need to wake up and change. this type of legislation won't do anything but make more laws, it won't right wrongs done in people's minds. it's a pacifier.

Ankyu.
Brings back my days of live horns and me doing shitty Bee Gees string lines on the CS80, circa 1977 while I struggled trying to grow a mustache and pretend I was an adult.
Actually I still pretend..

neither of which have been cured by changes in law.
women need to be respected, just like everyone else. until that happens(respect for human beings in general), all this other stuff is just window dressing.

It's easy to be idealistic when you are sitting safe in the sattle.
I do agree with you on this Gary, that in a perfect world, laws like the one discussed in this thread shouldn't be nescesary. But we are not living in a perfect world.
Using a law like this to give women a chance to proove themselves in "a mans world" might not be a bad idea for a period of time until "old habits and culture" has been proven wrong and old fasion.

Indira Ghandi was the leader when India exploded it's first nuclear device . Margaret Thatcher went to war with Argentina . Apparently Marie Antoinette said let them eat cake . Some rich bitch filipino I was talking to at a party said to me "my people??? aren't ready for democracy" . I guess the bottom line is what sort of women are going to get the nod . Probably in the grand tradition of government by decree the wrong sort .

yes, cloaked 'inservitude' is still rampant everywhere - especially against women and children.garyb wrote:![]()

yeah, the workers on the big farms, especially in cotton and tobacco live pretty much like serfs always have, too.
