"Same with any platform. Write a simple Windows app and you'll need visual basic. Why would any commercial company give something that difficult to construct away for free?"
no you don't.. you're able to download several compilers for different languages for free for the windows platform and the api documentation is available. Maybe creamware don't want to give away the point-and-click scope /dp software but they should at least make a api interface that let you do modules coding good old sharc assembly and a little gui code. Currently there is no way to do this. There is plenty of devkit stuff available for sharcs but creamware won't let you use it without scope /dp.
And if scope /dp software alone cost $3000 (and that's the "light" version that doesn't handle scripting), well that's a very good way to keep smaller developers away from the platform as well as anyone who feel like getting their hands dirty. The larger developers won't get on the platform unless they feel the platform is a worthty to invest in, and apparently they do not. Sometimes you'll have to give a little to get something back but it doesn't seem like creamware is prepared to do this.

Subject: Pulsar synths versus others
I have the NI Pro52 software synth and the Steinberg PPG2.0 and I'd agree that either of these sound way better than ANY of the Pulsar synths. I wish I new why, because I'd rather not be using my CPU to run synths. (BTW: to be fair, I've only tried the synths that came with pulsar)

Dear all,
Tell me if I'm wrong on any of the following......
1. Pulsar/Scope synths sound fucked. They are the audio equivalent of a kids toy! Crap filters that consistently sound honky and really muddy with no bright top end.
Show me one, (just one) fat patch that comes close to the quality of a supernova, virus, reaktor, waldorf Q, etc , etc
2. Uses way too much memory and slows down my comp to shit. Redraws are slower, and it just feels like the whole system is being dragged down once you've got a pretty big project happening.
3.Pulsar/Scope effects are fuckin' BABY TOYS!!!! Where's a fat ass reverb that works reliably out of the box? How about some decent multi-effects with preset patches huh? The chorus is lame, and the delay is annoying ie: there is no way to sync effects together! BABY TOYS!
4. The mixer is a phasing nightmare. The whole point of a pulsar is so we can mix on them, isn't it?( enough said ). Actually not enough said..... Ever heard of someone taking home a Mackie and being happy that the channels are not in phase with each other?
There is a ridiculous amount of fader latency, no control over meter ballistics (which look like crap) and are slow. Still no automation after 2 years, and no decent external control surface compatibility. ( promises , promises ).
5. The MIDI is buggy as shit! Really unreliable with sysex. ( try dumping some sounds across it to one of your synths ) HA HA!
6. The VDAT? Who the hell is going to use that!
7. The DSP resources are so limited, I mean if these things are supposed to compete with native processors, then they need to deliver a whole lot more than they do. If a Access Virus plug-In in Protools offer 16 voices plus chorus and delay FX and use only 1 motorola DSP chip then either SHARC are crap, or Creamware has delivered the equivalent of a windows OS for SHARC DSP's!
8. Try this ......
draw a MIDI volume gate in your sequencers control data window at 16th notes, basically sending on/off to your synth.
Send that data to one of the Creamware synths and play a few notes.
CLICK, CLICK, CRUNCH, CLICK will be the result.
Great HUH!
...HERE'S A FEW ERROR messages from our sponsor.....

I could write pages more about why these cards are so fucked. If you guys are happy, fine. : )

Subject: All true.
Creamware is walking on a thin ice with their greediness. Remedy to almost everything you said excists and is called Scope. Nothing wrong with the Pulsar card (and other non-Scope Creamware hardware) except for the spider in the back of the card. The Creamware shop should be a free download page or atleast the prices should be like twenty percent of what they are. The Scope software should be available for Pulsar users with enough DSPs and the price should be nominal, we have already paid for complete solution, not a need for constant costly updates! The price for their software development package shows clearly that their aim is not to make great cards with great software support and became a great name in the business but to drain their excisting customers dry!

Subject: pulsar sucks ?!?
hey there,
as a heavy user of pulsar ii i agree to most of the things you guys have written.
but there is one thing you should refer and that is the price you paid to get an almost perfect(by devices) studio.
how much money would you spend to buy all the hardware equivalent to the pulsar devices ? , i guess it'll be around 10 times than pulsar cost.
i think you just expected to much from it.
i for example bought pulsar to get immediate solution to a whole studio , and i'm intending to buy hardware from now on untill i'll get to the phase that the pulsar will be only my sound card (which is done very well buy pulsar).
the pulsar gives a very good solution to guys like me who can't eford a whole studio (or even part of it) at the moment , i mean you can't creat a whole track with only one or two modules (which , again costs more than one pulsar card !).
on the other hand , i certainly agree that creamware should refer her costumers at this attitude (we are all beginers and bought pulsar not 'cause it's that good , but because it's chip solution for a whole studio !!!!! , and a studio MUST have a good smapler in it ! ! !) and give her devices for free or at least on a reasonable cost.
they have to improve their system all the time (unlike the shitty 2.04 , as someone in this forum said it's a downgrade not an upgrade).
this attitude can make more beginers to choose to begin with pulsar .
i'm not sure you're all agree with me , but that's my opinion.
peace

Subject: I agree
With you.
At first I was frustrated because I expectd too much from pulsar.
But - At the bottom line - pulsar gives you a little bit of nothing.
It's a semi - semi pro card.
Today, though, there are better solutions. At the price of pulsar,
you can buy an rme card + Reason. I think it will work and sound alot better.
As audio cards today can get to 1.5ms, and cpu's are faster, and also OS's are more stable, and still alltogather they cost less then pulsar/scope,
I think creamwares days are numbered.

Subject: I agree, somewhat.
As native systems are getting more professional the only way Creamware can stay in the competition is lowering prices and offering more software. There is always the need for I/Os and therefore the audio cards are needed. I like the flexibility and power DSP cards can offer. The Pulsar software is great when it comes to connections and possibilities but there is room for serious improvement.

Well, me too. I thought that Pulsar will be my synth and my sampler, and I was too naive (that's was 2 years ago). Now (after trying many of creamware expensive modules) I have a hardware sampler, a hardware synth and an external adda convertors. Pulsars is only my internal audio mixer. To be honest - I don't get that much error messages, but the sound - even of the mixer alone - Is crappy. Something in the summing of all the channels together is done wrong, so that why I'm not mixing on pulsar either - just recording and editing.
I think there should be some orgenized protest against creamware for taking our money and giving us nothing but nice blue graphics.

Hai there,
You guys seem to be quite frustrated,If you don't
know how to set up a PC,then let somebody do it who understands this crazy machines with parts of Gates mind
in it.If you follow his idiotic, unlogical rules and the info
about optimising your computer and setting it up properly
it can sound great with the Pulsar system.
Use more of the modules synths of John Bowen(ZARG),Wavelength,Orbitone,Grenzfrequenz ,Sonic timeworks etc.
Some of them are even free and are of equal quality like
the Supernova (try the SB404,or the EDs16)
I'm a betatester so I'm working with versions before you
guys get them and I,ve seen the shit you are talking about
but since 2.04 it is very stable and the timing has improved
a lot.
Sampler,I own the STS3000 and 4000 ,but when producing
a use wav2Akai ,it works a lot faster and easier.
P.S.I use a PIII550,512cache,192mB,Asus P3B-F,300Wattpower-
supply(This is very important,prefab pc's have 200 or 250
watts which is not enough )
GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Subject: opinion on pulsar
Well.PULSAR is an excellent routing and mixing-system.On some points I agree on these harsh statements.Too many troubles especially pulsar +cubase is a horrible combibnation. On the other hand I use pulsar pretty much with Samplitude 2496 with very very few problems. The Creamware effects are baaaaad, but you can get very good effects and reverbs elsewhere,but......you can´t use them because of PCI bus overflow, that´s not the whole truth :when I disable USB I can use one with Cubase.I think that the sound of the system is not optimal but I think the reason is the converters.Use other convertes.
If I accept the fact that PULSAR is not able to perform all of the features at the same time I still happy that I bought it.

Oh really? Nobody bought them? Which would mean that Roland didn't make that many, coz it was a flop? Interesting how many are floatin' around these days then, huh? I guess everyone whose bought one second hand must've bought it direct from Joe (you know...the guy that used to manage the storage warehouse for Roland...and just decided to keep himself a couple of trays of those fandangly 303 thangys that just weren't selling at the time)Hmmm...Methinks you better go do some research you li'l historian you.
Besides...you're comparing a 303 & a Pulsar? The 303 did A THING. It had A SOUND (well...2 technically I guess...if you count both waveforms). Hardly comparable to a Pulsar (fx/synths/mixer/all-in-one stdio in a box available in the year 2000) dontcha think? But you do have a point. I think that your comments are slightly out of proportion people. It's true, we had some problems and still have a few, but not everybody and not as many and as much as you let us understand you are having yourself.
So, by logical deduction if not "everybody" had problems with Pulsar itself (being exactly the same Sound Card for us all of course) and if most people have had completely different problems or slightly different ones, it means that those problems DO NOT come directly from Pulsar, but from their PC's, hardware and configuration. Pulsar, as far as I could experience, is a very exigent environment, and needs a dedicated system devoted to Pulsar only. If your system is clean, and properly settled, it works fine!
Synths and FXs are of a "VERY" relative nature, when you say: "I like it", "I don't like it". It is a very SUBJECTIVE matter I mean. Anyway, Pulsar's Synths can produce pretty amazing sounds if you spend some time working about with your knobs, exactly the same I can say about some (not all) of the plug-ins offered by the original bundle. In fact, there are people who are vegetarians and hate pork, there are also people who hate fish and love lamb. Others hate honey-like flavors and like extremely salted and spiced food, etc., etc., etc…. Among them, who is Wrong and who is Wright? Non, of course!
In fact, I don't think there exist out there anybody with an absolute objective perception of universal rightness in the test of the different individuals, non the least when talking about SOUND… Unless, of course, you have read a book called: "Absolute Rules for Likes and Dislikes. Follow it or die!", or something like that… which, BTW, has never been written and will never be, because it's just impossible!
What REALLY troubles me here, is your absolute luck of GRATITUDE for those who, even if you hate their devices, gave you SO MUCH of themselves! Or at least, disagree with some respect.
I would like to say thanks: THANKS THANKS THANKS, to all of those who have given away so many marvelous devices, free of charge or at very low prices, just because they love music and want to share their experiments with other users; for all of those so useful FXs, Synths, Mixers and modules of all sorts. THANKS THANKS and THANKS again to all of those who have shared their (some times) wonderful presents and Modular Patches. To the different members of Pulsar-Scope Third Party Homes for their so admirable ENTHUSIASM and support! And… certainly, to CREAMWARE TEAM for such a breathtaking marvel.
Let's think, for example, about the "Comb Plus by Zarg" WHAT A SYNTH!!! Thank you one millions times, it really is fantastic, indeed… It is one of the best Synths instruments I've ever heard, and the presets that come with it are really inspiring. Of course, it's a matter of taste, obviously, like everything else in live… Can you imagine if we were all in love with the very same woman? Je… what a problem! Guys… you are so many out there, that it's difficult to remember your names, your devices, your presents, etc., but… from the bottom of my heart (and you can be sure there are many, many people who feel and think like I do) appreciation, gratitude and thankfulness from us all, very happy users of Pulsar, for you!
I'm a Jazz-Rock-Fusion musician and eventually work as a composer too. I have done a lot of work with Pulsar, and had very little problems. At the beginning it certainly was unstable, but from V1.3a it started to be better and better. And today it's better than ever. So what? Some of my musician colleges and sound engineers were more than impressed by the results of a single Sound Card. The only device, which gave a few headaches to us all, was the STS4000 because it could only play samples but could not freely manipulate them to create loops, etc. At the beginning, I used the STS only for playing samples so it was fine, but when started to create sounds I realized that it didn't work properly, but I don't need to insult everybody on earth just for that… I can understand, easily, that Creamware members are a serious team and that they are doing their work in the best way they can. If not, why do we have constant updates a forum new devices, new hardware and support? Do you really think they want you to be unsatisfied? Not everything is "just money", no guys… do not mistake. Those people are musicians too, and they love their job, and they love to see as happy. So please, don't be son ungrateful. Each time one of us behaves like if they were a bunch of criminals, I'm sure they feel a bit depressed too. They are not machines makers of machines they are human beings. So show some enthusiasm you too guys, common, don't be so unfairly deceitful!
Imagine that someone is intelligent and adventurous enough to "see in his mind's eye" and "create" a bicycle that can carry four thousand kilograms of orange marmalade in a flask. It sounds crazy, doesn't it? Well, it's not as mad as that when you think and REALIZE what Pulsar CAN DOOO!!! Which is absolutely amazing!!! What can you ask for at that price? Of course there are much better solutions, everybody knows that, but only if you have about 15.000 $ and a lot more for additions like cables, cases, connectors, etc. So, do not ask to a bicycle that emulates a lorry, to behave like a real one, because it is out of place, disproportionate.
