why is Google Adsense browsing this forum? [bot]

Post by siriusbliss »

I just noticed that one of the 'users' browsing this forum was Googles' Adsense (a bot).

Why?

I don't see any ads.

I guess it's true that Google is just a glorified NSA backdoor spyware application. :P

its not 'one ad'. its one ad on every page, even if you choose to post/reply, its there, its new, and we better get used to it since we (ok, its a generalization, but i am included) dont bring enough money into this page to make it sustainable (sort of, its a matter of technology and the lack of grasping it).

The reveue generated will be shit, as 1.Most people wont click it and 2. If 10 percent of us regulars clicks the add the income will still be shit. not to forget that many of us filter this stuff allready.

What i would suggest is to set up a torrent tracker, especially since this is a self moderating, user driven site. Let the users share the file handeling, and costs drop. allow pics >100k for general posts.

There is no need to pay for bandwith if you actually dont need to.

You can use NoScript if you want.

I've tried it, but it also cuts out half the other sites I go to - or forces choosing to bypass, which wastes time.

Not a huge deal, since the ads are tucked at the bottom rather than all over the place.

I agree with NTN - it's a waste nevertheless.

I didn't know there were ads here either ;)
but yes, I also wondered why all those google and friends bots came along, and I still don't know why they are flagged as registered users...

Allowing web crawlers to index your site is how you show up in search results. Allowing Adsense to browse keeps the ads relevent to the content.

Yes well, whether it's adsense, yahoo or bing (MS's new branding) the person who runs the ad network owns the house so to speak (to use gambling terms, which is essentially what it is for advertisers.)

Hey guys,

Yeah I just added adsense to the site last week. Really an experiment to see what happens.
I think so far I've made 88 cents - of course you don't actually get paid until you make over $100, so i probably won't see a dime for a looooooong time. :)

All those other bots were previously scanning our site. As valis points out- that's how we end up in search engine results. The adsense bot is new, and yes it scans the content here so it can serve related ads. Kinda funny what it comes up with sometimes!

I've never run any kind of advertising here before, and i don't intend to start placing giant ad banners everywhere. This is just at the bottom of the page, easily ignorable, or you can block it if you want. OTOH, if you see something you think looks interesting, click on it and feel good that your little click may generate a few cents of income towards planetz hosting costs :)

If it becomes obnoxious, or doesn't generate any actual revenue, then I'll remove it.

I think you can make more money with the Amazon affiliate program. Then you will be getting 10% of each purchase I think if someone clicks on an ad and buys it.

I think it's fine as well, google's ads are among the least obtrusive ad networks out there. If someone is potentially worried about the amount of data Google has on them let them use ixquick aka http://www.startpage.com/ or give some of their tracking info to bing.com (MS's latest rebranding effort.)

I'm using Google Voice for phone calls. They transcribe my phone messages and it has free long distance.
