Can anyone help me find some RAM modules?

Post by Tau »

HI all,

I'm sorry to bother you, but I have searched high and low, and can't find what I'm looking for. I was thinking that maybe one of you can point me in the right direction, and even if not, this may serve as a heads up for anyone looking for a new Mobo with PCIe.

Like many of you, I have been waiting for the XITE, and I've made an effort to keep my ageing DAW in duty until it comes. It had no PCIe slots, and could only take up to 2Gb RAM, which was not enough anymore. Because the people that I work with (and work for) don't take "soon" for an answer, I had to upgrade in a hurry in order to keep my deadlines.

Last March I bought the best parts available in the shops 'round here, and I ended up with an Intel E8400 CPU and a Gigabyte EP43-DS3 Mobo. These were not too expensive, and the performance increase in terms of CPU was immense - enough to finish some heavy projects that were already freezing the older machine. BUT, the problem is, the Gigabyte Mobo doesn't accept just any RAM module, especially in Dual Channel mode. After a few failed experiments with standard OCZ and Kingston 800 and 1066 MHz modules from the shop, I found a document on Gigabyte's website listing the approved memory modules, and, surprise surprise, I can't find any of them for sale anywhere (at least the 2GB ones, I'm not that interested in buying 512MB or 1 GB sticks). So, right now, I'm using a single 2Gb stick of Kingston, and the other one is useless - if I try to put it in a slot, the pc won't boot at all...

From the website, there are only 2 models of 2Gb 1066MHz RAM that are compatible:

Apacer 78.AAGAL.9KF and KingMax KLEE88F-B8KB5

If I decide to go for 800Mhz :( , there are a few more models:

Elixir M2Y2G64TU8HD4B-AC ; GEIL GB28GB6400C5QC ; NCP NCPT8AUDR-25M88 ; PSC AL8E8F73C-8E1 and Qimonda HYS64T256020EU-2.5-C2

I can't find any of these anywhere. I did manage to find an italian shop on Ebay that sells the KingMax, but, for some reason, they won't respond to my e-mails, so it's as good as nothing. The modules must be exactly the same type as I specified here. For example, the 2Gb Kingston modules I bought are actually listed as compatible, but only up to 1Gb... I also contacted some of the manufacturers directly, but they won't sell retail.

I would be most thankful if someone could direct me to an online shop, preferably in Europe, that sells these and ships to Portugal. In the meantime, if you're planning on buying a Gigabyte Mobo, try to find out what sort of RAM is compatible, so you don't get a nasty surprise like I did.

Thanks in advance,

T

well that sounds picky... did you check your RAMs voltage? the mobo only supports 1.8Volt.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

yeah, I know... The modules I have are 1.8v, in fact they are the exact same reference as the recommended ones, except for the 2GB part.

I sent the first Mobo back, because I thought it was damaged, and the guy at the store thought so too. But then another one came, with the same issue, and that's when I found out about the "Qualified Vendors List" on the site. After that, he's refusing to change it for a different model, but he cannot provide the necessary RAM sticks.

I have since found many threads on the web about this, a lot of folks complaining about not being able to use RAM in Dual Channel mode. A few, though, can still load 4GB in Single Channel mode, but I can't get it to boot up with more than one RAM module installed.

Of course, it can still happen that I track down the proper RAM and it still doesn't work, but in such a scenario, I'd be entitled to a new Mobo, though I'd hate having to reinstall all this software, and licences and stuff. Took me almost a week last time...

Thanks anyway, NTN, I appreciate your input.

Hi Gary,

No, the latest BIOS on the Gigabyte site is the one that came installed, version F9, September 2008...

It's just weird... :-?

Thanks for the input, though, I hadn't checked that in a while.

Another intriguing thing about this Mobo, is that it came with "propaganda" stickers all over the components - as if you hadn't read all that hype in the box already. Most of them are those kind of metallic ones, really thin, and they come out fine. But, for some strange reason, there was one over the RAM slots, and that one was the papery type, and if one isn't careful peeling it off, it can leave traces of gluey paper behind, which is just plain stupid, IMO.

On the 1st Mobo, after peeling off 2 or 3 metallic stickers, I wasn't expecting the one over the RAM to be different, so, when I peeled it off, I tore it, and I'm pretty sure some of the goo went inside one of the Mem slots (guy in the shop says no :) ). That was actually what I though was happening, even though there were still 3 other slots (including a dual-channel pair) supposedly working. On the second one, I was really really careful, and peeled everything off all at once, but it seems that wasn't the reason why it wasn't working.

It's a bummer, but at least I can work, and I kept my promises to my friends. 2Gb is not a lot, but since I have Scope in another PC, I can share the load and still come out with a good sound. But when the XITE arrives, I would like to start using a single machine, and maybe then I'll find the 2GB a bit more limiting. I'll also have to figure out a (cheap) way to have 3 Screens in one PC, maybe I'll go for the Matrox DualHead2Go thingie...

Let's just say S|C are giving me plenty of time to sort this out :)

ATM I'm searching the web for a good recipe to make tomato soup... I usually cook some Miso soup to get me through the night, but today I feel like something different.

Thanks for sharing this with me.

Cheers,

well, there's always a different motherboard, but if you can do all the work you need to do with what you got, everything's good anyway...

...and that sums up the good part of things. I would still prefer to be able to install 4Gb RAM, so if anyone knows where I can find any of the models indicated in the first post, I'd be most thankful.

Qimonda HYS64T256020EU-2.5-C2 is available on request from Qimonda.

I could be wrong but the links from pricewatch are usually valid. The recently cleaned up the DDR2 section and PC133 sections.

I have a GA-EP45-DS3. I'm not sure how similar it is to your board (probably not very) but for what it's worth I'm using OCZ Gold 800Mhz RAM (8GB in 2 matched pairs), works great. Probably not much help if you want to use faster RAM, but 800 Mhz seems plenty fast to me (running a quad core here though).

All right, now we're talking!

Jimmy, thanks for the hint, I'll look into that as soon as I can. I have contacted the Qimonda distributor for Portugal, but got no reply so far...

Darkrezin: Well, it shouldn't be toooooo different. It's another chipset, but the same "Energy efficient" series. But for sure it's different enough. What seems to be good news is that your OCZ 2GB sticks aren't on the recommended list for the EP-45 DS, but if they do work, there is hope after all that I can get some other RAM sticks to work. I did try OCZ, though...

The RAM I have now is also 800MHz. I'd rather have the 4Gb of 800MHz RAM than 2Gb of 1066MHz...

I'm just curious about one thing: did your motherboard come full of stickers too?

Thank you both for the help!

Cheers,

These were the OCZ sticks I used - they aren't the most expensive but they aren't the cheapest... maybe it was the 'value' series you tried which are cheaper and possibly not as good?

I've heard good things about A-Data RAM as well incidentally (Vitesta800), and I know of people using them fine in the same board I have.

And yes it had those damn stickers... very annoying and I don't think I got them off totally 'cleanly' either but I don't think there are any issues from any residue - my system has been amazingly solid. In fact I've heard from many sources that Gigabyte is one of the best brands right now. Looking at the board it has really quality looking construction and capacitors, better than any other board I've seen.

Anyways good luck, let me know if you have any more questions.

well, I bought a used matrox qid some months ago, because I thought this was my way to go, but I headed for a bigger display then and don't need 4 display support anymore (I have a P690Plus now). pm me if interested.
