Does anyone here use 6 inch MIDI cables for closed in racks, or close proximities?
I'm not very tech savvy, but I have used 3', 5' for interconnects inside my racks for connections to the analog synths and DAW.
Because of the new rack design, and MIDI I/O's on the XITE-1 I have gone with 6 inch MIDI cables, and I am noticing a big difference in the controlling of the analog synth.
I have added an envelope modification switch for super snappy attack times, which has a nice thunk to it, and can be switched off/on. My SE-1 went through an entire mod which basically added longevity to an already incredible design.
But what I am noticing now is the instantaneous tracking of the knobs coming from the inside of a Scope project. Before the XITE-1, my cards and the MX-8 merger worked well but I noticed a very slight delay which was not a show stopper, but is was there.
I come from the KS88 to the MX-8 MIDI In, then the MX-8 MIDI Outs go the XITE-1, and the analog synths, and soon the Solaris.
Could this super fast control I am seeing be from these little 6 inchers?
If so I am going to start using more of them since I do not have to loop back out of the rack to reach my MIDI I/O's like I did with the cards.
Or maybe the XITE-1 has faster connections from being hard wired instead of a cable whip.
Cable Length Questions
Re: Cable Length Questions
since travel down the cables is at the speed of light, i doubt it's the cables. more likely the new system is just faster..
Re: Cable Length Questions
I got the envelope modification to get that snappy sound the Access Virus has, which I believe is why that synth is so popular.
Having a FAT BASTARD 3 Osc. analog doing this is really sweet, especially if one is controlling the CutOff Frequency of the Filter via an expression pedal while stabbing out percussive rhythm's.
Whatever the reason, I have a more streamlined interior, snappier sound, and super fast/accurate control of my Analog now.
It's such a pleasure waking up everyday knowing I will discover something improved or new.

Someone more knowledgeable with the Xite itself probably knows the answer. I would wonder if some of the async stuff was being handled inside the unit given its onboard memory, rather than on the host OS. I know my midi timing suffers a bit on an ancient P4-era Xeon machine when I have that machine under a heavy cpu + dsp load (bidule&scope running full stop), but since I don't use it as my primary host it isn't a killer for me in a studio context.
Re: Cable Length Questions
Since the Upgrade to Scope 5 (PCI), Midi works better in general with the old pci cards, too. Well, I didn't do extensive tests, but it feels faster and stabler at first sight.
