6" x 6" Maglev Fan

Post by dawman »

Before I came here I tried to serach but could only come up with internal ATX connections on the motherboard that would work with this fan.
On my new chassis I have a case fan that matches the hole in my SKB ATA case, and I always like having an extra fan.
I found the perfect fan, but I was hoping some tech savvy guy could tell me how to hook this fan up w/o using the motherboard.
An external connection would be great but I am clueless to electricity, etc.

The holes for each case match up perfectly, and this would be a permanent fixture. I always taped a houeshold type of fan to my speakerstand, but this fan will be perfectly alligned and more direct airflow.

Would it be possible to hook this up to some kind of recharable battery maybe.
I am up for anything that will allow this fan to be used.

Thanks.

To hook it up to a battery have a look for power invertors there are many out there that should do what you require

You could always just plug it straight into a isolated 110v shaver socket  isn't american voltage supply 110v @ 60Hz, just a matter of getting the polarity the right way round for the desired fan direction and I repeat use an isolated shaver socket - this could be mounted in a box with a wall plug on the end for portability (seriously though please don't try this without asking an electrician)

My serious advice ends at power invertors. The rest is at your own risk.

Good luck :)

The cable length is 15" and after many different ideas the best solution is to route the cable through an empty PCI slots' removed plate cover and sticking it on the Motherboard.
That's where it's suppose to go anyway.

a 140mm fan ought to fit .

that fan is very loud btw. maybe a "red scorpion" which are cheap and quiet.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/EverCool-RSF-14-Red- ... 240%3A1318

i bought a bunch of them, i use 2 of them with a HEPA filter for allergies in the summer, they work fine, and very quiet.

and to hook it up, if you have a PC of some sort in there, you can get a external SATA PCI plate, that has a molex in it, then you can get an adapter for molex > fan connector, or maybe the fan has molex, i cant remember (im at work)

http://www.crazypc.com/products/2270.html

you might have one some motherboards come with it.
or just wire it directly, but then you have a fiddly wire to remove (or forget about) when you need to pull the PC out.

I was hoping you'd reply as I know you are always building stuff.
I have found a fan/molex connector inside the new chassis.
Since the cable is 15 inches I can route it through the facelpates for the PCI's and just connect it to the chassis's extra fan connector.

I will check out the fan you showed me and hope it has a long enough cable.
It's my new 8U chassis and the hole in the ATA Shockrack lines up perfectly with the fan hole on the ATX chassis. I

This will be a new DAW this summer, but I have to buy slowly as I wait for Intel price drops, etc.
Thanks to SSD's and i7's Nehalem EP next month the parts I want will be pretty cheap since the sales have dropped 50% since last Winter......
AMD seems to be selling their Phenom II better than expected........
They more these guys compete, the better off we will be..

I don't know if they have the right size for you,
but NOCTUA fans are clearly the most silent i've tried. Especially if you have something to set the speed of the fan (because at very high speed, it is noisy anyway, but at frequencies that are easier to deal with than with any other fans i've had)..
What i like is the lack of those very high frequencies even at higher speed.

They come with rubber pins to replace the screws, like an extra anti-vibration mecanism (it won't make the case vibrate, or much less than with metal screws).

Thanks Medhi,
I was told the Sunons were noisy and Chinese.... :o , probably zero QC manufacturing also.
I bought a really nice chassis from China since they own most of the USA now, and so far it seems to be a quality build.
This really isn't a big deal if it's noisy since it will sit outside of the actual chassis.
But high amounts of noise show cheap building though.

Sunon does make noisy fans, but they're very popular with Supermicro, Intel and other server vendors (especially in 60mm & 70mm) so I'm not sure their QA stinks that badly...

chinese can make perfectly good stuff as long as they go through a proper design process
otherwise there would be no fine carbon racing bikes on the road because the lawyers would have eaten all the bike shops and brands.
