Thanks Alfonso - i and my family aren't in harm's way, but fires are approaching towns in Victoria where my friends live. It's cooling down there, but it's not over yet. The risk on this side of the country will heighten this week, with temps hitting 40C again tomorrow and staying there for a week. My native state of South Australia has missed out so far, but still in grave danger. Arsonists are often responsible.

There is the strangest feeling here, we see hell on earth continually in the coverage.

Our whole country is mourning.

sorry to hear that, for real!

glad you'all are ok...

here in California, some of the chaparral that burns every summer MUST burn. many of the plant species don't reproduce otherwise...

The ecosystem here includes fire as an ongoing catalyst as well.

Ancient custodians of this land did regular off-season burnoffs to prevent disasterous build-up of fuel and this is practiced here to some extent, but not enough. All we knew about bushfire before this season will have to be thought through again.

The bush will always burn, but this one is huge.

i hear you...

it's quite a coincidence that i saw a tv show today about this resurrected train line near Perth(as i remember) which had a story about a huge fire that engulfed a whole town many years ago...

I heard on the radio just today that in '61 a fire south of here got out of hand, with many villages razed and never rebuilt. That could be the one Gary. Never heard it mentioned before today either. No lives lost, a milder weather-set...they say winds in this latest fire were 120km/h, roaring in the bush like jet engines. Hills & thick eucalypt forests in that part of Victoria.

181 confirmed passed away here now, with 50 still missing  .

Our worst national disaster since the Bali bombings.

What I nightmare. Most people just going about their daily lives wouldn't have planned for something of this scale.
