Throwin' a band together

Post by wayne »

I'm excited :D

The local Blues Club is putting on a NOLA Mardi Gras tribute day here in the most isolated capital city on earth on 24th January, and my task is to get the 2nd line brass band side of proceedings together.

Bass drum, snare drum, trumpet, tenor sax, trombone, tuba.

They're blocking off the pub carpark and putting 2 stages in, and we'll be cruising through between acts.

The band is called the Charlie Brown Brass Band, after lifetime club member Charlie Brown, who passed away last year.

Charlie was an old AfroAmerican Cherokee Ex-Serviceman bloke who settled here, had Nyoongar kids, lived it hard, dug his blues, never missed a Tuesday night at the Charles Hotel.

Tunes on the agenda:

Hey Pocky Way - Meters
Mardi Gras In New Orleans - Professor Longhair
Junko Partner - Dr. John
Carnival Time - Bo Dollis, Wild Magnolias
Workin in a coal mine - Allen Toussaint
A Closer Walk With Thee
Jambalaya on the Bayou - Hank Williams
Hot Tamale Baby - Buckwheat Zydeco
Manteca - Dizzy Gillespie & Chano Pozo
When the Saints/ Down By the Riverside/ St James Infirmary
Blueberry Hill with the brass section playing Donna Lee over the changes a la Jacky Orszascky :D

I am really looking forward to this :)

Damn Brotha' Man,

I just saw this and know how motivating this can be for me.
You picked an excellent song list.
You could take that to the Heritage Festival once polished.

Son Of A Gun, Havin' Fun On Da Bayou..................yayess indeed.

Please record it.
It will be cherished your whole life.

Makin' Me Proud Bro.

Thanks for the kind & encouraging words my companeros - appreciate it.

-took some time off from painting the foyer of the art-deco theatre i work at (kinda complicated but tedious work) and did our second rehearsal, this time with full compliment.

These boys are smokin' :) Both the trumpet & tenor players are bandleaders in their own right, and as we pass a stage either will pull a mike down and deliver the vocals. Then we'll move on. The snare player is the 1st-call drummer here, and his favourite 20-year-old student protege is on bass drum (who is an awesome drummer in his own right).

It's a lovely alignment of fellas who have a genuine respect for the music of New Orleans and surrounds, plus i get to rip it up in a totally tuba friendly environment :D

This Saturday is forecast for a mild 31C, so all's well. Now to rummage for some threads... :D

Dang! Here is another.

Pity, 'cos the f-book one captures the band outside playing "A Closer Walk" while laying on the ground.

Yeah Wayne.....You have definately got to get an mp3 for me.
That looks like more fun than N'Orleans. It's just too crowded during Mardi Gras down there.
I heard it's hotter than a whore house on Dollar day down there. 120 +?
It explains those loose as a goose shorts.

Glad to see the real deal goin' on down under.

Cheers.

Indeed :D

Yeah Jim, lost buckets o'water fangin' on the tuba in the sun, strides woulda been too much :)

Just noticed my attitude adjustment hanging out of my pocket in one of the videos - woops! :D

The south-east side of the country is baking, but here is a little cooler this year all up. It ain't finished yet, though.

Meanwhile, with another band somehow we've scored a gig next week down south at the Bunbury bikini competition. :D :o :(  Wasn't too difficult to pull a band together

I know you'll share some mpegs & jpegs of that.
The most exciting job I've done in 8 months was an outdoor Micro Brewery party.
