I just had an idea, but did not have the time to test it yet :

I read that the latest Xen virtualisation software for Linux permits PCI pass-through for the guest operating system.

So if I understand well, we could assign one or more pci slots to a virtual machine running windows, and then... use the creamware boards
in virtual machines while still enjoying a fine Linux distro (no multi-boot and rebootings, more stability (at least for the host OS) ...)

I'd be glad to hear from you about the feasability, the pros and cons and so on...

Anyway I'm very tempted to try it this week end, just for the technical interest :p

I also wondered whether that was a way to go or not when I read that announcement.

I'm a big Linux supporter... but I gotta say, for this application, I think you would be better served running WinXP Pro, and then using VMWare Workstation to host a Linux guest OS.

Basically my thought is that if you want low-latency audio, you want the native side of your platform to be the audio side. ... Just a thought. I guesss it depends on which side is your own most important OS or application.

BTW, the current edition of Linux Journal has an excellent summary of Linux Audio applications.

I'll give this experiment a try as well, and report back. Installing the Xen kernel as I type this on Ubuntu Desktop 8.10 rc...

OK. Tried some of this stuff. Could never find the mbr to force it to boot. This may not be baked in the 8.10 kernels at this point. Not sure.

It does appear that the Ubuntu folk are pushing kvm (qemu) now.

I finally installed a ubuntu intrepid ibex distribution on my music computer,
But it seems that there is no Xen dom0 kernel released for intrepid yet.

So I tried another virtualization software: kvm (formerly q-emu), but this one
only has "basic" pci passthrough feature for the moment (it only works with ethernet
adapters and scsi controllers).

So in fact I couldn't try the idea yet... I'm not that much into virtualisation and xen,
is it possible to build my own dom0 kernel before an 'official' one is released ?
