Tiny MIDI controllers (like Novation ReMote)

Post by kensuguro »

Anyone use one of these tiny MIDI controllers? I might be needing one if I were to perform the NES chiptune stuff.. I am tracking with Alesis Micron, which works fine, but I can't use the knobs on them because they send nprm and not standard CC. I know my 88 controllers well, but not the 2 octave ones.. any specialists in this area?

I just need one with usb power + MIDI, probably more than 2 octaves (less than 49 is ok tho), continuous knobs, sliders. I don't need drum pads. I also prefer joystick over wheels and ribbons. Why are joysticks so unpopular anyway?

ReMote is very close, except for the strange joystick design.. maybe they're not so bad.. Edirol PCR is close to.. but it looks kinda shabby and the pots are absolute.

hm. I just wonder about the micron... I have an ion, and you have the option to choose wether the panel sends out midi cc or nprn. it's in the global options - pnl midi...

I'm using the Novation Remote 25 (with no audio). In general I like it. I have to reboot once in a while or plug it into another USB slot. I don't know what the latency is is but it's fast enough for me. I do not use the XYZ pad. The knobs are very smooth and it seems not too complicated to program but I don't do that. It comes with a bunch of templates for popular hardware and virtual synthesizers but I don't use them much. I tried a few of the templates for Reason and it was pretty cool. You can also download more I think.

I've got a remote25 le that I use sometimes ....it's fine . Keys are a little spongy .joysticks fine . I had to get the mobo replaced and the tech took the spring of the mod axis which I like . Controllers work well . It's good :) if you dont like it it's so cheap it doesn't really matter . you just have to remember to turn it on before you turn on your seqencer /sampler /whatever or it doesn't get seen . a USB thing I guess . I listened to Jimmy and got keystation pro 88 , that one I like a lot .
Just one thing I used the usb to power the novation and the midi out to get out of it as well ... I think I might have cooked it's logic by feeding it back on itself somehow so you might have to watch that . all I can remember was I made a change in the routing window and it went loopy immediately :-?

Brotha' Man Skwawks,

On the KS88 are you using the USB for power, and MIDI for PCI MIDI from Scope?

I have lots of CC's for SpaceF mixers, synths, and FX. The 88 is perfect for external and internal needs, and works well for Gigastudio also.

I learned that on Intel motherboards, one can disable the USB controller ports, yet still recieve power to run the controllers. So I get less cords / cables, and better stability by disabling more IRQ prone options.

Well that's a GaryB trick that seems to work on all USB controllers, not just the KS88's.

I've only used the usb and I've really only used it on the GS3 machine . I've taken midi out of the scope machine into the GS machine by midiout from scope into the 88 and then selecting the second usb port in giga which works well . I haven't recorded any midi to scope for a few months as I'm trying to brush my piano/synth skills before I do any more midi recording . I've noticed that the usb bus is supplying power even when the giga machine is'nt turned on ,it's an abit board on the giga machine,so when I do record midi I'll probably take power from the gs machine and midi out from the 88 into scope without turning on the giga machine unless I need to . It's hard to get m audio power supplies in Australia , if you buy the gear from overseas the local distributors wont support you and although you can get psu's down here the plugs sometimes aren't a good fit so the usb power is a good option . I really dont know with the novation whether it just chose that moment to die or whether I killed it by confusion but it's made me a bit overcautious with connections these days :( . I'm not a piano players arsehole really but that old 88 seems to be leading me into a good technique space .

Cool.

It's a perfect controller to use w/ Scope and Gigastudio. You got 88 keys for pianos, faders for Scope mixers, and knobs for synths and FX.

Oh and BTW the bottom row of 17 buttons is a perfect choice for program changes. I store the most often used ones there for Sur Audio's PJR free device. Perfect snapshots where the presets are songs / performances and reset all of your levels..................BAMM ! :D

the way you use the ks88 as your limb's extension really amazes me. The amount of controls that's on there has lots of potential, that's for sure. I really like the long sliders, for detailed control. But the knobs aren't continuous are they?

Nope.

No, but I would prefer bigger knobs for that kind of action anyway.I would love to have a giant knob with high resolution for really accurate moves.

The little knobs are very useful for depth, rate, and wet / dry mix moves in real time.

Eaxh AUX effect I use as well as inserts are all assigned knobs via CC's. Some use Mehdi's CC5 & CC8 that can tie several parameters simultaneously like depth and rate, which might sound strange, but the MIDI buffers allow to keep the rate on an assignable curve ( speed ), while the depth can be maxxed out.

Real cool for flange and phase stuff, or on Flu_Liq one can really go wild as the zippers associated w/ delays and reverbs in DSP effects, does not apply.

Besides, they go used for 200-250 USD,,,,a real sore dick deal.

Hi stardust

You have been lucky! Damn, mine have an unuasble aftertouch and the pitch bend have a dead zone which prevent it to return to zero.

cheers
