Post by darkbear »

Hello guys! I am still running cubase vst 5r6 under windows 98 se with sfp3.1... :o
I dont know if there a lots of guy like me....But in fact i dont want to change cos this system is ok for me...But i HAVE to change cos my computer is going really old and i cannot find printers with drivers for 98 our usb keys , my hard drive is full, ect....So, did you know if can install cubase vst5r6 under XP (Dont talk me about Vista...)? Does i have to upgrade to SFP 4?Did you known if my (sometimes very) old plug-ins will works into xp? It's a true nigthmare for me cos it takes times to have a stable system...I have begin with pulsar 1 a long times ago...I know there other places where i can find answers but there no places like planet z... :D
Thank you in advance.
Darkbear, (like my computer i am now really old ...50 this year....)

Don't know, but you could choose a dual boot solution: one with win 98 and one with winXp.

And don't say that! 50 is Coool!
:-)

SFP3.1c is great with XP, but there's no reason to not get 4.0 while you're at it as it's the same, just with some extra goodies. Unlike other programs that 'upgrade' and introduce bugs, i don't remember 4.0 introducing any new bugs (maybe ModularIII, not sure).
i would just go Scope 4.0 if you're going to go XP SP2 anyway.

Some really old devices may not work, but if they work under 3.1c then they'll almost certainly work under 4.0 - do you have any specific devices in mind?

i still use Cubase VST 5.1 r1 (not sure what your's is, there was no r6, unless you mean an even earler version!).

Anyway it's possible to install both 3.1 and 4.0 (or 4.5) in the same WinXP+sp2.
Just create 2 separate directory and place 2 shortcuts of both respective spf.exe in the desktop.
It's howewer better to install before 3.1 and then 4.0 to obtain the most recent driver and XTC for the board. :)

[edit] I have both because some (very) old devices don't works in 4.5 [/edit]
4PC + Scope 5.0 + no more Xite + 2xScope Pro + 6xPulsarII + 2xLunaII + SDK + a lot of devices (Flexor III & Solaris 4.1 etc.) + Plugiator.

Well, if you wanna create a new DAW, you probably will use mor than 512 MB RAM. This will cause problems under win98.
On my DAW Cubase VST 5.1r1 and SL 3.1 run under XP home except the STS samplers.

Good luck, Thomas

It's a couple of years now since I took the plunge.
I was running 32/5.1r1 on Win 98 with SFP 3.1c
So I bought myself a big pc and changed to XP.
No problems at all really and the speed difference is amazing I can tell you.

One thing to watch out for though - if you have any VST's that you've registered online and obtained a "key" for them, you will have to re-apply when you change your hard disks.

I've never bothered to upgrade to 4.0 (perhaps I should).

Honestly Neil, there's no reason not to. i'm in the 'if it ain't broke' camp too, but i got the 4.5 deal because of the extra devices and it is no different to 3.1c in stability etc. It will not screw your system like a certain Steinberg update.

Thanks for that.
I'll start a new topic on this later, so we don't screw up the theme of this thread.
Perhaps you can offer me some answers there.
I'll call it "playing catch up"

Thank you all for your reply...I feel less anxious now. My cubase version is effectively 5.1r2pb1...But i vaguely remenber that r2pb1 was a patch, and i can only find the cd with 5.1...Am i wrong? If r2pb1 is a patch , is there a place to download it? I can find nothing on steinberg ftp...but maybe i am dreaming and the entire version was on my cd....And i am glad to see people like me , keeping their old software....Long life to Sfp!

Take no notice of Kylie, DarkBear
He may be in his thirties and younger than us old un's, and he has a lot of knowledge. When he gets to our age hopefully he will have turned his knowledge into wisdom

No offence intended Kylie :D

so I'm just too young to treasure the deeper value of wisdom...
that's fine with me. I think I just go with knowledge

...but I already share enough wisdom not to take offence, Neil :D
