M$ XP Home w/ 3GB LAA Switch

Post by dawman »

For those using Scope w/ a VST sequencer or VSTi samplers, and effects. The 3GB Switch is a great free upgrade to XP w/ 4GB's of RAM.

I tried it before and achieved good results, but I had GaryB put this together w/ the new hardware, and I see the proper way to install this. It must be booted w/ the switch on, and having an option of XP 32 Home as a secondary choice.

For instance in Gigastudio 3 it appears as though the app was made w/ no consideration for more than 1.35 GB's RAM, so it will use the switch but only allows 1.5 GB's of use, but in apps like VST sequencers, and VSTi's it can use up to 2.5 GB's of RAM, depending on the developers build.

This is great news, as my main concern for Vista or XP64 bit was to address more memory for sample based instruments. This allows me to load all of the new VSTi's which are high quality instruments, much better than the sample libraries for Gigastudio, where many are outdated by the large support base for Kontackt.

I was limited while using GS3 w/ Scope as so many former Giga developers went with Kontackt based engines. I can now use the best of Gigastudio samples via GVI, and load many K2 based instruments.

Naturally I am excited, but I also have seen a great jump in DSP power as well. The newest 15DSP AES / EBU card was only an extra 9 DSP chips in this particular DAW, but the PCI bandwidth has increased from 11 MV's to 16 MV's w/ a DSP overload on the 17th !! Nothing about PCI overflow?

So Scope still plays with the big boys nicely, and I doubt I will even go to XP64 or Vista. This new DAW does a huge amount of work and loads about 60% more content than I had on previous projects.

If you need more VST power, check out this switch before going to 64bit unproven apps.
