Back in the days of frauds lip-syncing to analog tape, this sort of thing happened much less. Tapes don't skip. Milli Vanilli never had to worry about this sort of thing - of course back in those days they took pride in their lip-syncing craft. ELO could play their songs onstage and only an astute few would notice that since there were 140 instruments in the mix, but only 7 musicians at most onstage, something was "gone owt askew on treddle". (Also the fact that shows always started at 9:00:00pm and ended at 1:00:00 am raised suspicions).
