My small tribute to Michael Brecker (Funk Jazz)

Post by paulrmartin »

Here is the tune I promised. This is a revamped version of a piece I wrote about 8 years ago.

The real fun begins near the end where I was able to insert the Master himself :)

Let me know what you think

Wow! :( I’m so, so sorry about that... I didn’t know he died... He has been one of the very best sax players of all times, and definitely, not to mention that his music is at the forefront in Fusion-Jazz... He passed away very early in his life, just 57

Cool solo with your guitar Paul, loved it!

He left us so much!

It's not the style I listen to or play but somehow I feel qualified to comment on it.

It would sound way better with a live band playing it without synthesizers. You probably already know this.

Nice tune Paul, very fitting to the genre, really like the way you fitted Mr Breckers sax in there - can you divulge the secret as to how you did that? :)
Cool Tribute.

Michael Brecker - Solo Concert at the Jazzfestival in Frankfurt 2002 is the source of the Brecker samples. This was broadcast on the radio and I am not putting this out commercially (I hope I did not transgress any rulez here as far as copyright is concerned but I don't think so). One lick I liked so much I actually sampled twice! hehe

I did a bit of transposing (plus or minus 1 semitone, no more) but most bits I used are as I took them from the original recording. No time stretching was used. I kept the playing as is. I did not add any effect to the Brecker audio track, not even compression. The reverb on the original is already overwhelming so I decided not to add any either. After that it was just a question of which click to snap the individual samples to.

Now, if I could only get some really decent drum samples.... I am never satisfied with those.

Thank for the comments, guys. I realise that most members here don't like jazz but I can't help but share my little ditties with you. :)

Hey Ken! Word up! ;)

There is a remarkable new invention known as an mp3 player. May I suggest you buy one Hubird.

oh c'mon! put some sexy lag in the rhodes right hand!
awesome phrases though!

not too sure about the "blow up" sequence in the middle

heheh, great incorporation of the main theme into the quick transition runs. I was also looking for a little more thematic relationship in your guitar solo (to the main theme), but that's probably beause I'm working on my thematic variation/arrangements in solos these past few weeks.

As you're looking for feedback ... I'm sure that the rhythm / time signature is supposed to be like that but I couldn't listen to more than a few bars because of this. It doesn't "make any sense" to me. It almost sounds as though the music is stuttering rather than being smooth, as if I've got a problem with my computer and something is interrupting winamp during playback.

The sounds / mix / playing etc. are all fine for my ears though.
