Who is this, playing Hey Jude?

Post by John Cooper »

I'm curious if anyone can help me identify this cover of Hey Jude.

http://www.planetz.com/HeyJudeByWho.mp3

This is from a family tape, which I think my dad recorded off the radio in New York, circa 1970.

I'd love to figure out who this is, so I can find a better recording of it.
Anyone recognize the guitar player, or the singer, or the actual recording?

I've been googling ad nauseum, listening to all kinds of clips of different people playing Hey Jude... No luck so far!

Thanks
John

I thought that was a possibility too, as some of the lyrics are sung in spanish.

But it says, at this event, that he was backed by just drums and bass. (Whereas the recording is a full band, including even strings and flute, and doesn't necessarily sound live).

Also I listened to some of Feliciano's clips online, and the style is pretty different.

Hmmm! Any more ideas? :)

Ok, I think you may be right. I talked to my dad, and he remembers it being a blind guitarist. That narrows it down! :)

There's a recording of Hey Jude on his "10 to 23" record (out of print). It's not on ANY of his other records, so there was probably a royalties issues...

May have to buy this:

Still not sure whether it's him, as I can't find an audio clip of it anywhere...

Cheers,
John

to be honest, John - when I listened to the first half of the track I thought ... that's how they used to play it ... and ... my, is the dude stoned :D
it's Feliciano immediately dropped into my brain (as if it was a natural matter of fact) right after the first couple of words, the Spanish only confirmed it.
I was really surprised by the directness of the idea, as I never listened to any of his records except the unavoidable radio stuff.

imho the 'orchestral' part is a playback, some parts remind me at a mellotron.
pretty sick, that ultra-panned stuff, but stereo was new those days
maybe they 'cheated' a bit for radio transmission ;)

Mission Accomplished. It's definitely Jose Feliciano. I bought the record on ebay :)

It was actually the second half of a much longer recording.
I'll put it up here for a little while, then take it down for copyright reasons:

Thanks for your help.

I could tell from the guitar solo it was Jose. He had those signature licks that I loved back when I started playing.

Good one! I hadn't heard this version :)
