Think Guitar

Post by dawman »

I Recently acquired Six String. It is a must, especially when samples get mixed with it. It has so much body. But I finished my Wagner project, it only took 4 months, but what a composer. So I now hade time to go back to my roots when I played guitar mostly, and sequence from scratch some old Mahavishnu tunes using these nifty guitar presets. Once I started I couldn't stop, it was so much fun. I even have the Gigaviolin for Jean Luc Ponty's wah wah, phase fiddle. Since the drummer was Billy Cobham, and the tune is in 10/8 time, the drums were not easy. But once the guitar loop wraps back around there is that strange hypnotic groove, and this was really refreshing and inspiring to practice my solo chops. I get stuck in groove world too often from playing out and doing dance gigs. This Cubase 4 thing is gonna be some fun. Thanks GaryB.
I get some awesome sounding leads, and believe it or not I still use my mod wheel feedback sample done in 8 bit Ensoniq format. The guitar just bleeds into it's feedback at the 5th so nice.
For anyone who hasn't got Six String yet, quit waiting. It's the shit.

Not for a guitarist it isn't! :D

I've yet to hear a "non-real guitar" (i.e. synth or sampler of some kind) that sounds anything like a real instrument.

My heart's currently set on one of these beasts:

Cool.

What controls do you get on the "neck" of one of those beasties?

I just ordered a Sustainiac for my new Ibanez guitar.

http://www.sustainiac.com/

For the cost of the Six-String, you can buy a used guitar. The choice should be clear. Don't know how to play? Sample it!

That's a pretty mad looking thing!

A friend of mine bought an eBow recently for his guitar which I've had a play with, and gives a really nice sustained tone :-)

oh - a Frippo-Matic :D

I have a G+L Strat 'ultra-twangy' speciman fed through an Ibanez Valbee - the latter needed some heavy tweaking to get rid of the noise, but now it's a very good 'small' amp with record and phones out and fx loop for external gear.
Have ut it into a larger cabinet with a 10" driver, it's bloody loud for some 6 Watts output power... :D
I found it pretty stunning how much these (Korean) cheapo G+Ls vary in tone, though all are made on the same computerized machines.
Mine was among the first they got in the local shop, and I bought it immediately when I heard it's tone and felt it's response. Several others I tried later (just out of curiosity) didn't match at all. But just recently I happened to listen to someone who obviously tried also one of those 'lucky' exceptions - think he bought it, too.

you really cannot get anywhere near these subtle but important differences a real instrument makes, yet I consider my Casio DG20 still useful - if only the rubber fretboard wouldn't start to dissolve.... :o
The sh*t is you have to practize with that strange axe, but it isn't made for heavy duty ;)

cheers, Tom

The correct term is Frippertronix. Actually I read he uses a Fernandes sustainer possibly because it came first I imagine. I looked at guitars which come with a sustainer built in and they were no better or worse than my Ibanez. An exception is the Adrian Belew Parker guitar which costs $7,500 USD. It also has Roland MIDI and Variax built in. I've decided the Variax sound isn't that good though.

My next guitar might be a plastic Switch Innovo IV MIDI Electric.

Apparently MIDI can interfere with a sustainer.

Alrighty then,
I forgot to mention I was a guitar player myself. Since my classical, and finger picking chops have temporarily left, I use Six String to play the parts I can't play yet. But my chops shall return. 2 x decades took it's toll. Leads w/ rock / jazz / bluegrass will always be there, but I practice evryday hoping to speed up their recovery quicker. At any rate I am learning Cubase as we speak, so I can send some music to the Z. After 20 + years on hardware sequencers, the actual recording will be simple, and naturally un quantised. Unless I need the 384ppq thats standard on old Yamaha QX-1's.

I need to hear about how you guys record, etc. Cubase 4, then master and mix in SFP correct ?If I remember right, Brotha' Man Astro used the vibrato from the B2003 on his guitar 4 FX. That's better than my re routed Jeager which SFP inspired me to do.

I will have some sick shit as soon as I get more comfortable with this sequencer. Think " Guitar ", as in Inner Mounting Flame.

Just taking the opportunity to display pics of my babies.

Left : Gretsch Duo Jet G6128T - 1962
Shop Pic
Right : Home-made. Started life as an Ibanez semi-solid body of some description. I just used the neck.
The rest is:
Wood: Silver Ash top / Mahogany body
Pickups: Seymour Duncan at bridge / DiMarzio at neck.
The guitar including the pickups is 27 years old.
I couldn't find the pickups on DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan sites.

I love seeing fine instruments so well taken care of. I saw that Gretsch w/o the whammy in Steven Stills collection.

Any recordings of these mastered in Scope ?

The Gretsch is new - re-issue
You can hear the home-made guitar
HERE

Recorded in scope using GAM.

P.S
I'd like to see the Duo Jet in Stephen Stills collection if you have a link or a pic.
I've only ever seen him with Falcon and Country Club

I purchased this Daion Guitar on Ebay and this is how it arrived, You can imagine my horror. It 's a bit rough looking out of the newpaper, but plays and sounds wonderful. You get lucky sometimes.
