The switch was fairly painless. I freaked out when I didn't see the license on the dongle but you find syncrosoft under programs and click the update button and it connects to the mothership. Then you just put the number in and no other information is asked. This isn't where you register.
After using this for an hour, I can say that it seems more stable and mature. It might sound better but that could be my magination. I'll investigate this further.
The synths are a big step up from what they had before. The patch browser is annoying because it takes a while to refresh every time you click on a category. There is a wide variety of sounds. They are OK but not incredible.

Any infos on the *new* synths already ?
uuhh, i'm still on sx 1... i may should upgrade onetime... ok, i only use it as a multitracker, no mixes, no effects, just a bunch of audio channels...
I've got a friend using "1".... uses it for everything..... his attitude is that he's got too much to learn about mixing and sound still to bother upgrading.....
But his eye's have started to light up when he talks about SX4.....is it that good?
Yes, I liked the plucked string sounds in Halion. I don't really have that in my other synths. It has some odd sound effects too. Tons of analog synths but we all have enough of those.
Note to users. Some of the effects such as reverb seem to be missing! They are under "Old Effects".

The metronome does not work at all. I tried to route it to Reason and I noticed it is sending a mute signal rather than a note. Instead I created a drum track.
I didn't try the SX4 update posted on the Steinberg website.
I don't know what's up with that metronome. I had a problem in the past with it not being in sync, then they fixed it and now it looks like they broke it again.
I should mentioned that they killed support for DX plug-ins.
A lot of people are upset about this because there was no mention of it before they released it. All angry threads on this subject at Steinberg.net are being locked.
There is a free VST plug-in which is a 4 effect rack that loads dx plug-ins:
i don't see all that much interesting new stuff in this releas that makes me wanna upgrade, but I'm still on version 2 so I might upgrade to get both the SX3 and 4 features at the same time.
I'd like to see an overhaul of the automation system sometime, better looping features, and an easy way to route a midi controller to cubase mixers and effects. (like Sonar 6's ACT: http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/SONAR/Control.asp)

Something nice happened. Before It would bomb and I would have to restart the SFP and Cubase but now it only bombed during that stupid patch browser thing but when it does it just gives an error message so I can keep working then when you go to save it, it forces you to save it under a different name.
Downloading the 4.01 update now. They claim they fixed the issues with "MediaBay". This feature is what I totally hate about Cubase 4 and you must use to to browse for a patch for any device!
"MediaBay now offers more overall stability and better performance. Various technical issues have been addressed, together with several minor user interface problems."
Some strange happens here.
When i route sp/dif to asio2 dest and change cw from master to slave, the samplerate take a trip on its own It just keep running 32-44-48-88-96 again and again. Anybody else tested cubase4 with cw as slave?
Cubase 4 does not allow native Side Chaining yet, though all VST3 plugins delivered with Cubase already support that internally (Side Chains are part of the VST3 SDK). Side Chain will be introduced together with the possibility of free Group channel routing (back and forth) within the Cubase 4 generation cycle.
I tried the s/pdif in on my Pulsar and it the sync was perfect and instant.. Then I loaded Cubase and still no problems. Are you using a decent digital cable? It should be nice and thick.
I have to say that I have had problems with Creamware s/pdif in in the past. Emails to Creamware about it always resulted in no answer. I mean they didn't even have the common decency to reply to me. I think there is a problem for some people and they know about it and they have no intention of trying to fix it. Similar to the Mod III shell situation.
