a16 - recorded files 16 or 18 bits

I got an old a16 converter box (not the ultra). I understood it is 18 bits AD.

I recorded a 24 bits file (which should have 18 valid bits). The anaylsis tool in Wavelab tells me my files are 16 bits instead of 18 bits. How comes? True?

I would say so...
The converters are 18 bit types and this is usually used for 16 valid bits.
It makes sense, though I must admit that I didn't know the box does it immediately and unquestioned - I have the same...

don't worry about the bit count - if you feed it a solid level then it will give a great audio result.
It's true that you loose headroom, but there are folks who still prefer this box over a lot of 24bit gear.

agreed, the sound is good. at least I can save some HD space then, no reason to record 24 bit files with it
